Mehr Melodram als Horrorfilm, das Spannung mit intensiven, klug berechneten Bildkompositionen schafft. Trotz überdeutlicher Altersspuren - die Anklänge an expressionistische Kulissen sind oberflächlich, das Maskenbild wirkt überholt - ein reizvoller Film, vor allem im Vergleich zu späteren, oft zu grausigen Verfilmungen der klassischen Gruselgeschichte.
