Das Album vereint Soundtrack und Score, denn auch die von Atticus Ross komponierte Filmmusik befindet sich auf der Platte. In seine Songs ließ der Musiker, der unter anderem für seine Arbeit mit Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) und Regisseur David Fincher bekannt ist, Fragmente zahlreicher Beach-Boys-Klassiker einfließen. Brian Wilson, der 2015 sein 11. Studio-Album "No Pier Pressure" veröffentlichte, schrieb eigens für die Film-Biografie das nachdenkliche "One Kind of Love". Auf "Love & Mercy" ist der 73-Jährige zudem mit einer Live-Version des gleichnamigen Songs vertreten. Mit "Don't Worry Baby", "Good Vibrations" und "God Only Knows" finden sich drei Songs der Beach Boys auf dem Soundtrack. Ein besonderes Highlight ist das "God Only Knows"-Cover von Paul Dano, der im Film den jungen Brian Wilson verkörpert.
