Zusammenfassung: | Korean documentaries have garnered greater attention in recent years with the success of films like "Our School" and "Old Partner", but it's not possible to talk about Korean documentaries without mentioning Kim Dong Won. The pioneering filmmaker's 1988 film "Sang-kye-dong Olympics" is often cited as the beginning of Korea's indie documentary movement, and his 2003 film "Repatriation" remains one of Korea's most watched and most acclaimed documentaries. Though not that well known outside film circles, Kim Dong Won's legacy of socially conscious filmmaking about local events and issues has made him one of Korea's most influential and respected directors. [www.korean-movies.com] We'll Be One (1995): A chronicle of Reverend Moon's work towards the unification of the two Koreas. A fervent activist, Reverend Moon was thrown into the media limelight when he visited Kim Il Sung in North Korea. According to the South Korean government, this visit had broken the National Security Act and Reverend Moon was sent to jail. He had previously been jailed for other opposition activities. Reverend Moon was also responsible for igniting a grassroots unification movement. [asiapacificfilms.com] The 6 Days Struggle at the Myong Dong Cathedral (1997): What started off as a student rally on June 10, 1987, soon became a widespread call for democracy by the people of South Korea. Fathers and nuns from the Myong Dong Cathedral came to be part of the cause, when the church intervened to have rally detainees released. Over the course of six days, the general public also supported the demonstrators by giving them food, cigarettes and monetary donations. Interspersed with archival footage, are interviews with the demonstrators, held ten years after the rally. [asiapacificfilms.com] |
