SUMMARY This book explores the history of the two most important publishing houses of the Czech exile which were both active in the 1970s and 1980s and primarily published fiction. Index in Cologne and Sixty-Eight Publishers in Toronto both published their first volumes in November 1971. In the course of the next twenty years, they published about 400 books altogether, or roughly twenty a year. Compared to the official publishing houses of Czechoslovakia, this is a very insignificant number, and yet these two exile companies paint a much more authentic picture of the artistic development of the most important Czech writers in the period between 1969 and 1989. In November 2021, both publishing houses celebrated their fiftieth anniversary. The Literary Academy, as part of the University of Creative Communication in Prague, celebrated the anniversary on 20 October 2021 with a scientific conference. The list of invited guests included writers who published in Cologne or Toronto and who came to share their memories and experiences with researchers and students (there were Jaroslav Vejvoda, Karol Sidon, Lubomír Martínek and Jiří Dědeček; Jan Novák recorded a video message). Another guest was Alexandr Tomský, the founder of the competing publishing house Rozmluvy, who provided his own interesting perspective on publishing activities. The atmosphere of the meeting and the informational and scholarly value of most presented contributions led to the idea to prepare a monograph to commemorate the anniversary. The core of the monograph lies in expanded versions of the presented
conference papers supplemented with several new chapters. The book aims to present key aspects of exile publishing activities through several specific deep dives. The individual studies are bookended by two chapters written by the editor Michal Přibáň (Institute of Czech Literature of the Czech Academy of Sciences and University of Creative Communication) which focus on the period when both publishing houses started operating, and the time when they wound down their activities twenty years later. In the first section, titled Publishers, Eduard Burget (ICL CAS and UCC) talks about the immediate reaction of the Czechoslovak authorities to the establishment of new exile publishing houses and describes the circumstances under which the first Index book was published: a novel by Jiří Hochman, humourist and journalist who stayed (and was persecuted in) Czechoslovakia. Petr Šámal (ICL CAS) uses the example of Ludvík Vaculík to explore the problems with manuscripts of writers who stayed in Czechoslovakia but 235
were not allowed to publish, which made the inclusion of their works in the publishing plans of both exile publishing houses very difficult. The remaining two chapters of the first section focus on specific aspects of the activities of Sixty-Eight Publishers. Veronika and Václav Krištof (UCC) discuss the concept of the covers of books published by the Toronto company and their practical aspects, while Ondřej Sládek (ICL CAS and PdF MU) offers an overview of literary scholarship published by Sixty-Eight. The second section, Authors, focuses on the writers who published in the two exile publishing houses. We open with an older paper by Michal Schonberg (University of Toronto) about Jiří Voskovec’s promised but never written memoir. The study was originally published in Danny, the bulletin of the Josef Škvorecký Society, and as such not publicly available. Voskovec’s unfinished Stín svobody (The Shadow of Liberty) was to be one of Sixty-Eight Publishers’ most important books, and one that the Škvoreckýs planned to pubfish for years. Schonberg’s paper does not only provide a detailed exploration of one part of the history of Sixty-Eight Publishers, but mainly illustrates Voskovec’s creative frustrations in the final decades of his life. Zuzana Říhová (ICL CAS and UCC) focuses on the exile poet and writer Milada Součková who started writing in the 1930s. Součková published many papers, articles and reviews in English, but also continued to write fiction in Czech - which was largely ignored in the United States where she lived after 1945. Vladimír Novotný (UCC) offers an overview
of the exile works of the unjustly forgotten writer Jan Beneš. A former political prisoner who fled to the United States, Beneš remained true to the non-conformist poetics of his generation and purposefully retained even in exile the perspective of an “angry young man”. Joanna Czaplińska (Uniwersytet Opolski), who has been specialising in Czech exile fiction for many years, focuses on younger authors who published in exile at the end of the 1970s and in the 1980s. Mária Staňková (FF UK Bratislava) uses the example of Ivan Kadlečík to discuss the so far neglected question of Slovak writers publishing in Czech exile publishing houses. She also offers general information about the Czech-Slovak exile and samizdat literary exchanges and briefly examines the interpretation of the history of the Slovak literary exile in Slovak literary scholarship and journalism after the Velvet Revolution. Alena Přibáňová (ICL CAS) views the activities of SixtyEight Publishers through an original lens: by examining the self-reflection of publishing activities in the writings of Josef Škvorecký and in particular Zdena Salivarová. The final section, Context, deals with the broader situation of publishing activities in exile. Petra Loučová (ICL CAS) describes the unsuccessful attempt 236
to deliver a large shipment of exile literature to Prague by the German couriers Gerhard Küchen and Ulrike Ackermann. She also mentions other methods that were used to smuggle books from exile and concludes that some of the couriers, often members of Western left-wing organisations, seem to have been largely forgotten by historians. Gabriela Románová (ICL CAS) examines the very end of the exile publishing era. She discusses the magazine Most atd. (Bridge Etc.) which attempted to bring together all three branches of Czech literature: exile, samizdat and official. The first issue came out shortly before November 1989 and the second and final issue in a completely different context in 1990. This volume does not have the ambition to offer a comprehensive overview of the entire history of Czech exile literature, which is yet to be written. It is however the wish of the editor and all the contributors that in its writing, this book may be of some use. 237

SUMMARY This book explores the history of the two most important publishing houses of the Czech exile which were both active in the 1970s and 1980s and primarily published fiction. Index in Cologne and Sixty-Eight Publishers in Toronto both published their first volumes in November 1971. In the course of the next twenty years, they published about 400 books altogether, or roughly twenty a year. Compared to the official publishing houses of Czechoslovakia, this is a very insignificant number, and yet these two exile companies paint a much more authentic picture of the artistic development of the most important Czech writers in the period between 1969 and 1989. In November 2021, both publishing houses celebrated their fiftieth anniversary. The Literary Academy, as part of the University of Creative Communication in Prague, celebrated the anniversary on 20 October 2021 with a scientific conference. The list of invited guests included writers who published in Cologne or Toronto and who came to share their memories and experiences with researchers and students (there were Jaroslav Vejvoda, Karol Sidon, Lubomír Martínek and Jiří Dědeček; Jan Novák recorded a video message). Another guest was Alexandr Tomský, the founder of the competing publishing house Rozmluvy, who provided his own interesting perspective on publishing activities. The atmosphere of the meeting and the informational and scholarly value of most presented contributions led to the idea to prepare a monograph to commemorate the anniversary. The core of the monograph lies in expanded versions of the presented
conference papers supplemented with several new chapters. The book aims to present key aspects of exile publishing activities through several specific deep dives. The individual studies are bookended by two chapters written by the editor Michal Přibáň (Institute of Czech Literature of the Czech Academy of Sciences and University of Creative Communication) which focus on the period when both publishing houses started operating, and the time when they wound down their activities twenty years later. In the first section, titled Publishers, Eduard Burget (ICL CAS and UCC) talks about the immediate reaction of the Czechoslovak authorities to the establishment of new exile publishing houses and describes the circumstances under which the first Index book was published: a novel by Jiří Hochman, humourist and journalist who stayed (and was persecuted in) Czechoslovakia. Petr Šámal (ICL CAS) uses the example of Ludvík Vaculík to explore the problems with manuscripts of writers who stayed in Czechoslovakia but 235
were not allowed to publish, which made the inclusion of their works in the publishing plans of both exile publishing houses very difficult. The remaining two chapters of the first section focus on specific aspects of the activities of Sixty-Eight Publishers. Veronika and Václav Krištof (UCC) discuss the concept of the covers of books published by the Toronto company and their practical aspects, while Ondřej Sládek (ICL CAS and PdF MU) offers an overview of literary scholarship published by Sixty-Eight. The second section, Authors, focuses on the writers who published in the two exile publishing houses. We open with an older paper by Michal Schonberg (University of Toronto) about Jiří Voskovec’s promised but never written memoir. The study was originally published in Danny, the bulletin of the Josef Škvorecký Society, and as such not publicly available. Voskovec’s unfinished Stín svobody (The Shadow of Liberty) was to be one of Sixty-Eight Publishers’ most important books, and one that the Škvoreckýs planned to pubfish for years. Schonberg’s paper does not only provide a detailed exploration of one part of the history of Sixty-Eight Publishers, but mainly illustrates Voskovec’s creative frustrations in the final decades of his life. Zuzana Říhová (ICL CAS and UCC) focuses on the exile poet and writer Milada Součková who started writing in the 1930s. Součková published many papers, articles and reviews in English, but also continued to write fiction in Czech - which was largely ignored in the United States where she lived after 1945. Vladimír Novotný (UCC) offers an overview
of the exile works of the unjustly forgotten writer Jan Beneš. A former political prisoner who fled to the United States, Beneš remained true to the non-conformist poetics of his generation and purposefully retained even in exile the perspective of an “angry young man”. Joanna Czaplińska (Uniwersytet Opolski), who has been specialising in Czech exile fiction for many years, focuses on younger authors who published in exile at the end of the 1970s and in the 1980s. Mária Staňková (FF UK Bratislava) uses the example of Ivan Kadlečík to discuss the so far neglected question of Slovak writers publishing in Czech exile publishing houses. She also offers general information about the Czech-Slovak exile and samizdat literary exchanges and briefly examines the interpretation of the history of the Slovak literary exile in Slovak literary scholarship and journalism after the Velvet Revolution. Alena Přibáňová (ICL CAS) views the activities of SixtyEight Publishers through an original lens: by examining the self-reflection of publishing activities in the writings of Josef Škvorecký and in particular Zdena Salivarová. The final section, Context, deals with the broader situation of publishing activities in exile. Petra Loučová (ICL CAS) describes the unsuccessful attempt 236
to deliver a large shipment of exile literature to Prague by the German couriers Gerhard Küchen and Ulrike Ackermann. She also mentions other methods that were used to smuggle books from exile and concludes that some of the couriers, often members of Western left-wing organisations, seem to have been largely forgotten by historians. Gabriela Románová (ICL CAS) examines the very end of the exile publishing era. She discusses the magazine Most atd. (Bridge Etc.) which attempted to bring together all three branches of Czech literature: exile, samizdat and official. The first issue came out shortly before November 1989 and the second and final issue in a completely different context in 1990. This volume does not have the ambition to offer a comprehensive overview of the entire history of Czech exile literature, which is yet to be written. It is however the wish of the editor and all the contributors that in its writing, this book may be of some use. 237 |
