The Iļģuciems Glass Factory is a vivid example of how the glass manufacturing industry in Riga and the rest of Latvia developed. It is the story of how the "mechanised glass shed", founded in the Ilģuciems suburb of Riga in 1886 by merchant Jakob Beck (1848-1894), became one of the largest and most successful glass factories in the city. It con tinued operating after the establishment of the first Republic of Latvia in 1918, then, following a change of ownership in 1927, the Rigaer Glass Fab rik Jakob Beck was renamed the llģuciema stikla fabrika (Iļģuciems Glass Factory). In the 1930s, it became the city's most renowned maker of glass and crystal products, driving the growth of both industrial glass design and artistic glassware in Latvia. In 1960, it was completely absorbed into the enterprise Rīgas stikla fabrika (Riga Glass Factory). Although more than 60 years have passed, Iļģuciems Glass Factory products can still be found in many museum, private and family collections. To day, glass products are highly prized in many sec tors of the economy as well as in the arts. Handmade glass objects are a revered part of the global cultural heritage, whose study and preservation has gained even more attention as the United Na tions has declared 2022 to be the International Year of Glass. The Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation (hereinafter the MHRN) began to intensively study the history and products of Iļģuciems Glass Factory in 2019 in preparation for the exhibition "Iļģuciems Glass". This exhibition (which ran from October 2020 to August 2021) was the first time
the MHRN's rich collection of products made in Iļģuciems up to 1960 were on public display, supplemented by rare items loaned by collectors and private individuals. However, due to the Covid-19 crisis, many people were unable to attend the show. Therefore, the MHRN decided to release a catalogue, whose first part was dedicated to the factory's history and is sues relating to the attribution of its products, while the second part included images of repre sentative products with annotations (Vivita Buivida, Ilze Dūdiņa). In a historical overview of the factory, Margari ta Barzdeviča examines its development up to the First World War. Documents from the Latvian State Historical Archives of the National Archives of Latvia reveal that up to the early 20th century several production buildings, apartment blocks for workers and an office building were constructed in Iļģuciems for the needs of the enterprise. The archival materials also show that the workers and glass craftsmen included recruits from glassmak ing centres where German was the predominant language. However, the documents shed little light on the types, forms and décor of the factory's glass products. Its most renowned item of the time is a slender, long vase of green or transparent colour less glass in the Art Nouveau form, also known as the "column" or "single flower vase". In her essay, art historian Ilona Audere examines how this iconicvaseform came to be included inthe Jakob Beck factory's product range. Audere also shares a per sonal story about two green vases that her grandmother received as a
confirmation gift in 1911. In several subsequent essays, Barzdeviča apprais es the factory's work in the interwar period. In 1922, the enterprise recommenced operation, retaining the name Rigaer Glass Fabrik Jacob Beck even af ter other shareholders had replaced the Beck fam ily. In the early 1920s, the Beck factory manufac tured so-called white glass tableware for domestic and export markets, especially Britain. However, due to the increasing competition in glass produc tion in Latvia and the reckless financial decisions 238
by the shareholders, the factory became insolvent at the end of 1926. In January 1927 it reopened as JSC Iļģuciema stikla fabrika. In the mid-1930s, JSC llģuciema stikla fabrika became the first enterprise in Latvia to engrave crystal, and to cooperate with professional artists such as Romans Suta, Ansis Cīrulis, Jēkabs Berķis and Eduards Vītols, develop ing high quality, decorative and fashionable glass designs in line with the fashion trends of the time. These modern items were successfully demon strated at shows in Latvia and abroad. In 1937, the factory won a Diplome de Grand Prix in Paris for its glass and crystal items based on sketches by Suta. However, this fruitful development was inter rupted by the Soviet occupation of summer 1940, when the factory was nationalised. Ilguciems Glass Factory continued operating as a state-owned enterprise during the Nazi occupation of Latvia and under the post-war Soviet regime. Thanks to the legacy of craftsmanship achieved in the late 1930s, the factory's artisans continued making high-quality, artistically refined items well into the Soviet era in parallel with standard mass produc tion. However, examining the factory's operation during the occupation, historian Zita Pētersone reveals that under the impact of Soviet totalitarian policies, the factory reduced the volume of artistic glass products, which were mostly handmade by skilled craftsmen, in favour of more mechanised, lower quality and more homogenous items (mainly glass containers). An essay by MHRN collection manager Vivita Buivida, appraising issues relating to the
identifica tion and attribution of items made by the factory, is also a significant contribution to understanding its history. Buivida has analysed the use of for eign samples by llģuciems Glass Factory in the 1920s-30s, as well as the latest trends in the de velopment of coloured blown glassware produc tion in the 1930s-50s. The author pays particular attention to problems of identifying and system atizing the most typical forms, colours and décor of the enterprise's products. In collaboration with Ilze Dūdiņa, glass artist and associate professor at the Art Academy of Latvia, she has also identi fied, researched and annotated the factory items included in the catalogue. The systematization of products and their scientific descriptions provid ed in this section of the catalogue will be of inval uable assistance to both experts and the growing number of admirers of the accomplishments of Iļģuciems Glass Factory. |
