Zusammenfassung:It was not until 1945 that scholars in the fields of historical monument research and conservation began to take a greater interest in historic plasters as authentic characteristics of historic monuments. Even today, the subject is sometimes under-represented in university research. A smoothing render intended to imitate the traditional "Marmorino" or Palladian-style plaster originally used in Venice and Veneto. It was used as part of the restoration work on the facades at the Belvedere in Vienna in 1947. Although Ludwig Förster published a formula for "Marmorino" in his journal on building-news in Vienna 1836 the use of smooth lime plaster only came into fashion in Vienna around 1900. Bruno Grimschitz had observed and spoken about the use of smooth lime plaster painted with light ochre for the facades of the Vienna Belvedere during the 1934 restoration work, but the post-war restoration work carried out in 1947 failed to take this into account. Instead, a hard lime-cement plaster in wrong interpretation of the Roman tradition by Vitruvius was developed. Until around 1970, this smoothing render was used on numerous facades of Viennese baroque buildings erected after 1700. The Carinthian state conservator Siegfried Hartwagner had this smoothing render used for the replastering of not only Renaissance facades but also numerous Gothic churches in the region up until 1981. The original texts on Marmorino plaster are attached.
