Zusammenfassung: | For the first time, a dendrochronological analysis has been carried out on the Johanneskapelle in Pürgg. The investigations on the chapel, which was built in the High Middle Ages, were focused on the two roofs above the nave and the chancel. Timber that was clearly part of the original woodwork was also analysed, such as the ceiling beams in the nave, which are a functional component of the roof there, as well as a lintel of the gable wall between the attics of the nave and the chancel, and the middle purlins of the roof above the chancel. All the timber used for the chapel’s construction came from the trunks of larch trees. In total, 35 of the wooden specimens analysed were dendro-dated to the period in which the chapel was built; a purlin from the chancel roof framework was also found to have been felled in autumn/winter 1124/25 (1124d), and a collar beam from the nave in autumn/winter 1125/26 (1125d). The dendrochronology of these high medieval larch woods is confirmed by radiocarbon dating; the combination of six radiocarbon dates resulted in the calibrated date of 1104–1130 cal AD. Parts of the roof of the nave were renewed using timber cut in the 1540s. Several rafters as well as other roof elements date back to this period. Based on the dendro-date of 1714d for a sill of the ridge turret, which is however in secondary use today, the ridge turret is likely to have been built in the eighteenth century. With the dendrochronological and 14C-dating of the timbers from the building time, the construction of the Johanneskapelle can be accurately determined for the first time. The dendro-dates of 1124d/1125d prove that the roof framework of the Johanneskapelle is the oldest roof construction to be found in Austria. |
