Zusammenfassung: | The largely well-preserved cycle of wall paintings in the Johanneskapelle in Pürgg is one of the few examples of such monuments in Austria that allow visitors to gain an impression of a room from the twelfth century. Structural alterations, coats of paint applied in the past, and the rediscovery and restoration of the chapel in the late nineteenth century left behind marks that were mostly reversed thanks to the "de-restoration" work carried out between 1937 and 1948. Since then, a more restrained concept has been adopted, focusing on respecting the authenticity and unity of the Romanesque decorative elements. Two research campaigns from 1976 revealed that the wall paintings had suffered progressive damage due to moisture, corrosive salts and microorganisms. In 2011, an interdisciplinary study of the chapel and its condition revealed the causes of this damage and allowed experts to develop approaches to rectifying it. A modified concept based on the restoration work carried out between 1937 and 1948 was chosen for the current conservation and restoration. |
