Zusammenfassung:When planning the ongoing conservation and restoration work on the Romanesque wall paintings in Pürgg, the mission was to bring about a "restoration of the restoration". The present-day condition of the chapel and its wall paintings was very much impacted by the outcome of the "de-restoration" work carried out between 1939 and 1948, during which large surface areas were treated with toned putties to give the surviving fragments of Romanesque wall paintings a more uniform appearance and so that the wall structure could have a more cohesive impact. Since then, a restoration concept has been gradually developed as a continuation of the work that was completed in 1948. Rather than following the usual approach of using new, plaster-coloured putties to patch up the imperfections, the existing smoothed-down putties and washes were retained and touched up to improve the aesthetic impact. The Romanesque essence of the artwork was brought to the fore while ensuring greater cohesion between the wall structure and the cycle of wall paintings. The continuation and reinforcement of the 1948 approach to the restoration work also ensured that this definitive period of time remained embedded in the "story" of this architectural monument.
