| Zusammenfassung: | The "de-restoration" of the Johanneskapelle in Pürgg was carried out between 1937 and 1948, reversing earlier conservation work on the chapel from the previous century. The project took place in a period of major political upheaval and was characterised by a paradigm shift in the approach to cultural heritage preservation around the turn of the century. More damage had been caused to the Romanesque wall paintings soon after the stylistic restoration, and the aim of the "de-restoration" was to return the chapel and its pictorial decorations to their "original" state by means of extensive structural work and conservation measures. These measures and the application of new plaster, however, resulted in a lack of cohesiveness between the space and the wall paintings. Therefore, new solutions for the aesthetic treatment of major imperfections had to be found. Not only is the large workload surprising considering the relatively short duration of the on-site works and the limited financial resources available; the radical approach to an artwork of such artistic importance is also astonishing. |
