Summary The collective monograph Atmiņu mantojums paaudzēs: dzīvesstāstu perspektīva (Legacy of Memories Through Generations: The Perspective of Life Stories) comprises eight chapters tracing the issues of generations, their memories and the transmissibility of experience. The authors offer an interdisciplinary approach encompassing anthropological, sociological, and historical research. Intergenerational memory transfer has been considered from a number of angles by analysing narratives and the specific language devices employed, and by identifying what has and has not been passed down across generations. Researchers have grounded and developed their ideas through an analysis of life stories deposited in the Latvian National Oral History Archive at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the University of Latvia. Our monograph investigates the circumstances which facilitate memory transfer as well as those which facilitate oblivion. In particular, we look at the impact of migration on memory transmission and how migration brings about changes in identity as younger generations acquire ties to their new country of residence. The monograph highlights the paradoxical co-existence of the succession and historical longevity of memory with its ambiguity and mythical power. The chapters of the monograph characterise the generations of the 20th and 21st century Latvians, as well as the succession and disruptions of memories. In the introductory part, the scientific editor of the monograph, Vieda Skultāne, opens a wide perspective on the transmission of memories from
generation to generation, directing the readers attention to such phenomena as remembering and forgetting, temporal regimes 253
of memory and the consequences to the human psyche brought about by tragic events. Here, migration of population in contrast to a settled lifestyle are considered in relation to their impact on memory transfer. In the theoretical framework, memory environments (milieux'), according to Pierre Nora, are replaced by memory places (lieux de mêmoire) when the transmission of memories between generations no longer takes place. No matter how past experiences are depicted in memories, the need to overcome inconstancy is manifested in various memorialization practices. The author presents a view of life stories as an oral performance, which, like a drama on stage, deals with moral issues in life. The diversity of generational typologies is considered in two chapters. Edmunds Šūpulis, outlining the specific features of life histories over the 20th century, advances a novel approach to generational identification in Latvia. Presenting examples from different countries, including the Baltic states, the author explains how the vertical and horizontal perspectives illuminate the functions of generations in the preservation and further transmission of memory. Kaspars Zellis investigates the concept of the “Soviet generation” and finds that behind this stereotype various resourceful forms of resistance flourish among which humour occupies a notable place. Zellis contests one-dimensional and stereotypical approach to the characterization of this generation. Several chapters are devoted to the role of memory inheritance in the context of migration. Maija Krūmiņa analyses nostalgia and its
important function specifically in the second generation of exiles. Ginta Elksne shows the diversity of migration trajectories in Latvia as one of the European countries with the highest mobility as a sending country. Based on interviews conducted in Sweden, Maruta Pranka looks at the second generation of exiles, who are gradually losing the influence of Latvian culture in their sense of identity. Memory transfers in the family are more thoroughly explored in two chapters. Māra Zirnīte through abundant examples from life stories reveals how the transfer of memories in conditions of exile influences the choice of the younger generation to move to the homeland of their parents. Agita Lūse expands the perception of how experience is passed from generation to generation. Her chapter shows how memories, as 254
carriers of values, find expression in the narrators character and action. Lūse outlines life histories of a family deported to Siberia and considers generational memory in the context of an ethics of care. The annex of the monograph contains the life stories of women belonging to four generations of the same family, supplemented by the comments of Mära Zirnite and leva Garda-Rozenberga. These stories are permeated by connectedness to the natural environment, creativity, critical self-assessment, and a sense of ones social mission. The memories that the youngest generation inherit from the previous ones enhance their awareness about the crucial importance that a nature-friendly and ecologically sustainable lifestyle holds for the life in future. The studies of Latvian life stories in this monograph reveal an awareness and acceptance of difficult experiences imposed upon all generations of Latvian society. Historical developments provide the impetus for human reaction and action. This perspective removes the barrier between academic history, subjective experience, and memory stories. We recognize that the study of memory and generations should be continued. Issues of gender, social and ethnic origin, urban and rural residence, and internal migration could all be explored in relation to memory and generation. Further research on these topics and the impact of public narratives on intergenerational memory would be a valuable contribution: both to historical comprehension and to strengthening mutual understanding and empathy amongst different groups of society. The monograph

The monograph
has been prepared in the framework of the project “Narrative perspectives on intergenerational transmission of memory” under the Programme of Fundamental and Applied Research implemented by the Latvian Council of Science (No. lzp-2018/1-0458). 255 |
