Zusammenfassung:The frescos at the Johanneskapelle in Pürgg are of particular significance in art history. Today, almost 130 years on from the discovery, these wall paintings are still Austria’s most extensive pictorial decoration of a small sacred space from the second half of the twelfth century. The iconography is nothing short of singular, especially in the nave. Here, the lower register of the wall is adorned with three scenes from the Nativity and the same number from the Feeding of the Five Thousand, while the upper register depicts the Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins. Johann Tomaschek convincingly construes the three biblical motifs as depictions of the "Threefold Coming of Christ". Following on from the biblical scenes, the cycle continues on the west side, beneath the derelict patrons’ gallery, with a painting of the famous war between cats and mice and a fragmented depiction of the devil. Finally, a half-length portrait of Christ appears at the top of the triumphal arch wall, and below it we see Cain and Abel, as well as two of the chapel’s donors. The chancel is dominated – again, in groups of three – by mighty prophets, kings, saints, allegorical figures, and the Lamb of God on the vault. Byzantine principles and the influence of Salzburg illumination are evident in the iconography and style of the murals.
