The East India Company was the largest commercial enterprise in British history, yet its roots in Tudor England are often overlooked. The early modern revolution in commerce led ambitious merchants to search for new forms of investment, not least in risky overseas enterprises. For these adventurers’, the most profitable bet of all would be on the Company. From the leaky ships and petty seafarers of its embattled early days to later sweeping commercial dominance, David Howarth brings to life the Company’s way of doing business. While their efforts met with disappointment in Japan, the Company’s agents found success in India, setting the stage for what would become the Raj. Drawing upon an abundance of sources, Howarth shows that the English court and English commerce were more entwined than in any other country. From Elizabeth Ts criticism of the Company’s ‘slackness’ during its first voyage, to sulphurous dealings between James I and its governor, Adventurers reveals how this complex relationship was essential to the survival of the Company.
