SUMMARY The book Skopje - In times of peace and dread (1855-1944) sum marizes twenty writings of various authors presented as part of the description of their journeys, but also as part of studies on specific topics such as The Bell of the Catholic Church the only active bell in Skopje by the Bulgarian historian Vasil Kencov (Васил Кънчов), Skopje of the Albanian revolt in the summer of 1912, in the reports of foreign consuls as well as the report of lord Lazër Mjeda Robbery, massacres, murders, violation of minor women sent to the Austrian government in January 1913. Skopje as an ancient center, but also in later historical periods has been the goal of almost every empire that has extended or tried to extend power in this part of the Balkans. The period covered in this book, which unfolds before the reader by various authors, from the Austrian consul in Thessaloniki, Johann Georg von Hahn, to the Jewish author Jennie Lebl, provi des lots of information, reflecting quite clearly the decline, the revival and rise of Skopje, in a period of almost a century, but of a period of efforts of various nationalist actors who have per sistently and by all means tried to change Skopje s true nature, appearance and spirit. In this book, we can say that different authors have directly touched the Skopje reality, have provided enough examples to have the opportunity for today s Skopje to feel even better than what has always been imagined by some different nationalist circles of the end of the 19th century, when the present-day capital of North Macedonia was turned into an
arena for Serbian or Bul garian nationalist propagandists. As a result of such campaigns that were mobilized in order to rea lize nationalist ideas and curricula, the effects of the disruption of the Skopje peace were achieved, which based on the informa tion of many authors included in this book with the works of the destruction of this peace unfortunately was paid for by the Albanian population of this city. 291
SKËNDER LATİFİ ♦ SHKUPI ֊ NË KOHË TĚ PAQES DUE TM ERRE VE (1858-1944) These were (1912-1944) dark times for the Albanians in Skopje and those times can be seen especially in the reports that are related to the First Balkan War, but also in the following years. Unfor tunately, the nationalist storm, especially the Serbian one, left long-term consequences for the development of Skopje, because this nationalism managed to destroy the cosmopolitanization of this city by deliberately dividing Skopje along ethnic lines with the constant tendency to turn this famous city into the bright Serbian Middle Ages. The title of the book Skopje - In times of peace and dread(18551944) in no way can be equated with the aforementioned ten dencies of nationalist circles, but this selection resulted in me especially from the clarification of the name of ancient Skopje made by the honorable author Jean Le Bel. In the end we can say that the twenty articles included in this book will at least help the future designers of Skopje, to read them at the same time to see the failure of efforts when trying to make a city as it was once Skopje and as it is today to impose a nature that does not suit him but also a nature that does not suit this city. But, even more so that in order to realize such pro jects, these designers should not foresee in the future even the annihilation of a part of the population of multiethnic Skopje, trying to kill the spirit of the people of Skopje, just as the spirit of the city of Sarajevo was unfortunately killed in the 90s of the last century!
