Zusammenfassung: | Nestled between the Greater and Lesser Caucasus, the Talish Mountain and the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan boasts a surprising diversity of pristine habitats. Part of the Eastern-Mediterranean climatic region, the country’s natural features include high mountains, forests, steppe, semi-desert, coast, floodplain and wetland ecosystems. Due to its highly diverse relief a tremendous biological diversity can be found within a very confined area. As of today, there are eight national parks and several strictly protected nature reserves as well as several state sanctuaries in the country. All national parks have only been established within the last six years– a remarkable achievement! Yet, despite these efforts there is still a potential for further protection as several important regions and habitats are either unprotected or covered by an insufficient level of protection. The following study analyses these gaps and the resulting potential for the extension of the protected area system. |
