Zusammenfassung: | Nguyen Thi Mai is a self-taught artist based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. She works mainly with acrylic painting and lacquer painting, although she is also experienced with oil on canvas, silk painting and ink painting. Distinguished Artist, ArtAscent Art & Literature Journal, vol. 23, February 2017. Awarded, Vietnam Fine Art Association Region 6 Exhibition (Group Exhibition), 2015. Awarded, Ho Chi Minh City Fine Art Association Annual Exhibition (Group Exhibition), 2015. "With its rich iconography of over 260 colour images, this book provides a survey of Vietnamese artist Nguyen Thi Mai’s work, focusing in particular on her recent artistic output. A self-taught artist based in Ho Chi Minh City, she mainly works with traditional techniques, such as lacquer and silk painting, but has given them a new twist, combining Asiatic traditional art practices with a modernist use of colours, forms and lines. Her works deal with themes like abstraction, love and emotion. Some of the most distinctive aspects in her paintings are a focus on the animal world and its symbolism; the centrality of the human figure – especially women; the interlocking composition of figures creating other composite images. Starting from the observation of everyday life, her style has slowly evolved toward investigating the traces that reality leaves inside her. Indeed, in her latest works the creation of imaginary spaces and creatures tends more toward the fantastic abstraction of reality. Nguyen Thi Mai’s works give access to an intimate, imaginary and poetic world, allowing the viewer to experiment an unconscious association with sensations, feelings and memories. "Through my art, I seek beauty. Beauty in the colours, the shapes, the lines and, most importantly, in the balance and harmony created by the interplay of all these different elements." (Nguyen Thi Mai) |
