THE DEVELOPMENT OF NAVAL HISTORY IN GREECE 315 To sum it up, popular naval historiography in Greece since 1989 supple ments thematically and chronologically the corresponding historiography of the Ministry of Defence and that of the Greek academia. Its scope is both practical and ideological, as it seeks lessons learnt and national inspira tion from past naval glories and adversities. It is a sizeable and diverse field historiographically. 6 Conclusion The field of naval history in Greece has not been left unattended since 1989. On the contrary, it has attracted considerable interest from the public and inde pendent authors, serious attention from the Greek state and certain good work by the Greek academia. Much is left to be done, though, if its development is to match recent advances in the naval historiography of the West. Despite the recent economic woes of Greece, modem Greek naval history will probably develop further, if only because of the many, chronic security challenges that Greece is facing. THE DEVELOPMENT OF NAVAL HISTORY IN GREECE 315 To sum it up, popular naval historiography in Greece since 1989 supple ments thematically and chronologically the corresponding historiography of the Ministry of Defence and that of the Greek academia. Its scope is both practical and ideological, as it seeks lessons learnt and national inspira tion from past naval glories and adversities. It is a sizeable and diverse field historiographically. 6 Conclusion The field of naval history in Greece has not been left unattended since 1989. On the contrary, it has attracted considerable interest from the public and inde pendent authors, serious attention from the Greek state and certain good work by the Greek academia. Much is left to be done, though, if its development is to match recent advances in the naval historiography of the West. Despite the recent economic woes of Greece, modem Greek naval history will probably develop further, if only because of the many, chronic security challenges that Greece is facing.
