Zusammenfassung: | "Founded by Peter the Great in 1718, Russia's police were key instruments of tsarist power. In the reign of Alexander II (1855-1881), local police forces took on new importance. The liberation of 23 million serfs from landlord control, growing fear of crime, and the terrorist violence of the closing years challenged law enforcement with new tasks that made worse what was already a staggering burden. ("I am obliged to inform Your Imperial Highness that the police often fail to carry out their assignments and, when they do execute them, they do so poorly because of their moral corruption...") This book describes the regime's decades-long struggle to reform and strengthen the police. The author reviews the local police's role and performance in the mid-nineteenth century and the implications of the largely unsuccessful effort to transform them. From a longer-term perspective, the study considers how the police's systemic weaknesses undermined tsarist rule, impeded a range of liberalizing reforms, perpetuated reliance on the military to maintain law and order, and gave rise to vigilante justice. While its primary focus is on European Russia, the analysis also covers much of the imperial periphery, discussing the police systems in the Baltic Provinces, Congress Poland, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Siberia"-- |

While its primary focus is on European Russia, the analysis also covers much of the imperial periphery, discussing the police systems in the Baltic Provinces, Congress Poland, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Siberia"--</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Geschichte</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Geheimdienst</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4019737-2</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Polizei</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4046595-0</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Zar</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4129736-2</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Russland</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4076899-5</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">1800-1917</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Police / Russia / History / 19th century</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">HISTORY / Russia & the Former Soviet Union</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">HISTORY / Europe / Russia & the Former Soviet Union</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Police</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">History</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Russia / History / 1801-1917</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Russia</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Russland</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4076899-5</subfield><subfield code="D">g</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="1"><subfield code="a">Zar</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4129736-2</subfield><subfield code="D">s</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Polizei</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4046595-0</subfield><subfield code="D">s</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="3"><subfield code="a">Geheimdienst</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4019737-2</subfield><subfield code="D">s</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Geschichte</subfield><subfield code="A">z</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="5">DE-604</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Erscheint auch als</subfield><subfield code="n">Online-Ausgabe</subfield><subfield code="z">978-963-386-576-7</subfield><subfield code="w">(DE-604)BV048312765</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="m">X:JSTOR</subfield><subfield code="u">stor.org/stable/10.7829/j.ctv2cw0rtw</subfield><subfield code="x">Verlag</subfield><subfield code="z">kostenfrei</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="2"><subfield code="m">Digitalisierung BSB München 19 - The liberation of 23 million serfs from landlord control, growing fear of crime, and the terrorist violence of the closing years challenged law enforcement with new tasks that made worse what was already a staggering burden. While its primary focus is on European Russia, the analysis also covers much of the imperial periphery, discussing the police systems in the Baltic Provinces, Congress Poland, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Siberia"-- Geschichte gnd rswk-swf Geheimdienst (DE-588)4019737-2 gnd rswk-swf Polizei (DE-588)4046595-0 gnd rswk-swf Zar (DE-588)4129736-2 gnd rswk-swf Russland (DE-588)4076899-5 gnd rswk-swf 1800-1917 Police / Russia / History / 19th century HISTORY / Russia & the Former Soviet Union HISTORY / Europe / Russia & the Former Soviet Union Police History Russia / History / 1801-1917 Russia Russland (DE-588)4076899-5 g Zar (DE-588)4129736-2 s Polizei (DE-588)4046595-0 s Geheimdienst (DE-588)4019737-2 s Geschichte z DE-604 Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe 978-963-386-576-7 (DE-604)BV048312765 X:JSTOR stor.org/stable/10.7829/j.ctv2cw0rtw Verlag kostenfrei Digitalisierung BSB München 19 - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=033935850&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis Digitalisierung BSB München 19 - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=033935850&sequence=000003&line_number=0002&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Literaturverzeichnis |
