Zusammenfassung: | "Recentering the development of industrially scaled Southern pottery traditions around enslaved and free Black potters working in the mid-nineteenth century, this catalogue presents groundbreaking scholarship and new perspectives on stoneware made in and around Edgefield, South Carolina. Among the remarkable works included are a selection of regional face vessels as well as masterpieces by enslaved potter and poet David Drake, who signed, dated, and incised verses on many of his jars, even though literacy among enslaved people was criminalized at the time. Essays on the production, collection, dispersal, and reception of stoneware from Edgefield offer a critical look at what it means to collect, exhibit, and interpret objects made by enslaved artisans. Several featured contemporary works inspired by or related to Edgefield stoneware attest to the cultural and historical significance of this body of work, and an interview with acclaimed contemporary artist Simone Leigh illuminates its continued relevance. Adrienne Spinozzi is Associate Curator in the American Wing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York." -- Publisher's description |

Adrienne Spinozzi is Associate Curator in the American Wing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York." -- Publisher's description Geschichte 1800-1900 gnd rswk-swf Keramik (DE-588)4030270-2 gnd rswk-swf Steinzeug (DE-588)4183075-1 gnd rswk-swf Sklave (DE-588)4055252-4 gnd rswk-swf Schwarze (DE-588)4116433-7 gnd rswk-swf Edgefield, SC (DE-588)5191896-1 gnd rswk-swf African American potters / South Carolina / Edgefield / Exhibitions Potters / South Carolina / Edgefield / Exhibitions Stoneware / South Carolina / Edgefield / History / 19th century / Exhibitions ART / American / African American & Black African American potters Potters Stoneware South Carolina / Edgefield 1800-1899 Exhibition catalogs History (DE-588)4135467-9 Ausstellungskatalog Metropolitan Museum of Art 09.09.2022-05.02.2022 New York, NY gnd-content (DE-588)4135467-9 Ausstellungskatalog Museum of Fine Arts, Boston 06.03.2023-09.07.2023 Boston, Mass. gnd-content (DE-588)4135467-9 Ausstellungskatalog University of Michigan, Museum of Art 26.08.2023-07.01.2024 Ann Arbor, Mich. gnd-content (DE-588)4135467-9 Ausstellungskatalog The High Museum of Art 16.02.2024-12.05.2024 Atlanta, Ga. gnd-content Edgefield, SC (DE-588)5191896-1 g Schwarze (DE-588)4116433-7 s Sklave (DE-588)4055252-4 s Steinzeug (DE-588)4183075-1 s Keramik (DE-588)4030270-2 s Geschichte 1800-1900 z DE-604 Spinozzi, Adrienne (DE-588)1271513617 edt Metropolitan Museum of Art (DE-588)1008914-7 isb his Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (DE-588)38524-4 his University of Michigan Museum of Art (DE-588)1046296-X his The High Museum of Art (DE-588)4036017-9 his |
