SUMMARY A turning point has to be reached in the system of relations between the environment and the economy because otherwise no improvement can be re ached in the state of the deteriorating environment. Protection of the environ ment is a national.interest, the government has to be determined in making the economy, together with the environment and the natural resources, part of the social and the economic policies by setting up clear systems of objectives and requirements and strictly controlling their realization. We have to break with that old-fashioned opinion which considers the protection of the environment a factor outside the economy and hampering the production of values. The practise of the developed countries proved that consequent environ mental policy might promote the development of a country and the stabiliza tion of the economy with creating new workplaces and increasing the needs and the performances. Without changing the relationship between the environment and the economy fundamentally, the decline and degeneration of the state of the en vironment cannot be stopped, we have to calculate with more and much more severe problems, which also cause economic losses under worsening living conditions. SUMMARY A turning point has to be reached in the system of relations between the environment and the economy because otherwise no improvement can be re ached in the state of the deteriorating environment.
