Zusammenfassung:The reception of a foreign author as a comparative problem -- What do we really know about Whitman in Poland? -- The poetics of Whitman and politics : Whitman and the politics of poetics -- The Whitman of Polish poets and writers -- Polish translation and reception series of Whitman's poetry.
"The present monograph is a shortened and updated version of Skwara's two books, written in Polish, dedicated to the reception of Walt Whitman in Poland: "The Polish Whitman:" On the Functioning of a Foreign Poet in the National Culture ["Polski Whitman": O Funkcjonowaniu Poety Obcego w Kulturze Narodowej] (2010) and The Polish Reception Series of the Poetry of Walt Whitman: A Monograph with an Anthology of Translations [Polskie serie recepcyjne wierszy Walta Whitmana. Monografia wraz z antologią przekładów] (2014). In both books, the essential question was not only the complete reception of Whitman in Polish literature and culture from the 1870s until today, but also the metadiscourse related to the research of reception itself. This monograph is in keeping with the tradition of research on the reception of Whitman in other cultural circles, including such excellent studies as Betsy Erkkila's Walt Whitman among the French and Walter Grünzweig's Constructing the German Walt Whitman. It also attempts to expand the current limits of explored research on reception. This entails going beyond literature itself to include other media as well as delving into the underlying social and political discourse surrounding reception. Skwara argues for the need to broaden the field of translation series research to include a more multifaceted concept of reception series. This new concept includes, besides translations, all the other evidence of reception: paraphrases, adaptations, intertextual/intersemiotic connections, commentary, interpretations, publications of a text, and their literary and publication history"--
