Summary This year Tadeusz Barucki ֊ architect, traveller, independent architectural researcher and photographer - is celebrating his one-hundredth birthday. The Institute of Architecture Documentation at the Silesian Library has prepared the present publica tion to mark this special anniversary. Tadeusz Włodzimierz Barucki was born on 13th June 1922 in Białystok. He received his secondary education in Sanok, gradu ating in 1939. Following the end of The Second World War he continued his studies in Lublin, enrolling in 1945 for courses at three institutions of higher education in the city - the Department of Sciences of the Marie Curie-Skłodowska University, art history at the the Faculty of Humanities of the Catholic University of Lublin, and at the Faculty of Architecture of the Polytechnic of War saw, which was temporarily based in Lublin. The following year he moved to Kraków to continue his architectural studies in the Polytechnic Departments of the Mining and Metallurgical Academy (subsequently the Polytechnic of Kraków), graduating in 1949. Following these studies, Tadeusz Barucki worked until 1961 at the Institute of Town-Planning and Architecture in Warsaw and state bureaus (among them the Bureau of Projects for the Mining Industry in Kraków and the Bureau for Communications in Warsaw). From 1949 he was actively involved in the work of the Association of Polish Architects (SARP), serving as its Gener al Secretary during the years 1956-1961. In 1961 he began travelling around the world, lecturing and documenting both historical and modern architecture. Writing
and lecturing on architecture and architectural photography became the focus for his professional activities, both as an independent researcher and as the author of publications and lectures addressed to a wider public. The fruit of over sixty years of his schol arly research takes the form of several hundred articles and reviews in architectural journals published in Poland and abroad, scores of monographs on individual architects and studies on both European and non-European architecture, and a collection of several hundred thousand slides documenting the architecture of the whole world, from the most ancient monuments to con temporary structures. From 1977 Tadeusz Barucki was one of the founders of the architectural database Arkisyst, affiliated to UNESCO. In 1981 he was awarded the prestigious Jean Tschumi Prize by the International Union of Architects (UIA) for his work devoted to in ternational collaboration in the training of young architects and for promoting the international exchange of information on ar chitecture. He is also a recipient of the Honorary Prize of the Polish Association of Architects (SARP, in 1985) for disseminating knowledge on architecture. The present publication attempts to present a portrait of Tadeusz Barucki through the prism of his myriad activities, and to highlight their pioneering, and occasionally also visionary, nature. He has been driven by an insatiable desire to explore the world of architecture, to document its rich heritage, and to share his knowledge with others. His books, articles and lectures have been an invaluable
source of architectural knowledge for several generations of architects. At a time when travel abroad was a rare privilege in Poland and the countries of the then Eastern bloc, his publications, lectures and reports were for many the only source of information on developments in world architecture. They also informed architects and architectural students all over the world about architecture in Poland and in Central and Eastern Europe. His articles in magazines and journals, and his mono graphic studies published as part of the series of the Small Encyclopaedia of Architecture, which was launched at his initiative, were rich in professional detail and at the same time accessible to the general reader. They broke through the barrier erected by the hermetic language of scholarly architectural studies, laying the foundations for the popularisation of architectural knowledge and general education in architectural matters, which was non-existent at that time. Tadeusz Barucki identified such a need dec ades before the rest of us did. He is the undoubted pioneer of the dissemination and popularisation of architectural knowledge and the raising of general awareness of the value of the built environment. 260 Summary
Tadeusz Barucki visited, researched and photographed the world’s most prominent works of architecture, both historical and contemporary. During his meetings and conversations with Polish and the world’s architects he constantly sought for a defi nition of architecture. His collection of hundreds of hand-written statements and recordings is something of a summa of contem porary architecture, and a limitless source of inspiration. During his epic journeys throughout every continent Tadeusz Barucki also discovered that great works of architecture do not stand alone, but are accompanied by modest vernacular buildings rooted in local traditions and constructed by local craftsmen-builders, whose knowledge and skills draw upon traditional experience rather than academic education. Fascinated with such buildings and their agglomerations, he made them one of the key areas of his research. He accumulated materials, extend ed knowledge, took many thousands of photographs, and prepared lectures and exhibitions. His intuition and research expe rience gave rise to the belief that vernacular architecture and local building traditions have their own exceptional values, which can provide inspiration for architects designing buildings in the context of local culture. This was also the reason why regional and vernacular architecture became the focus of his writings, lectures and exhibitions, at the time when it was otherwise large ly ignored. Today these building traditions are present not only in contemporary debate on existing architecture, but also in dis cussions on the future
trends of its development. Tadeusz Barucki s promotion of local building traditions with the use of natural materials was once again ahead of its time. It can therefore be safely said that Tadeusz Barucki is not only an ‘architect - traveller - researcher’, as acknowledged in the title of this publication, but also a pioneer of new perspectives on the appreciation of architecture, as well as paving the way for architectural education addressed to the general public. The present book is divided into several sections. It opens with a comprehensive biographical essay on the life and work of Tadeusz Barucki, followed by two sections devoted to his study trips, research and meetings with architects in Poland and abroad. The theme of his architectural peregrinations is introduced in the form of a personal recollection of travelling together by his wife, Edyta. This section also contains several texts by Tadeusz Barucki, recounting impressions from his journeys, con versations with architects and traveller’s anecdotes. It concludes with a personal statement on architecture ֊ an architect’s cre do. The next section of the book comprises texts by friends and collaborators who, while congratulating the subject of this book, share memories and personal stories of their acquaintance with Tadeusz Barucki. The book is richly illustrated with materials from the family archive. It also features photographs by Tadeusz Barucki selected from the many thousands of images made by him during his travels around the world over several decades. Today these have a special value as unique records
of both time and place, but also in terms of their artistic merit. They reflect their author’s sensitivity to architecture, his perception of buildings and environments in terms of composition, scale, materials and details. Tadeusz Barucki’s collections of architectural photographs present vivid stories in their own right, of the peoples, landscapes and cultures that gave birth to particular buildings. This is par ticularly evident in his photographs of vernacular architecture. The final section of the book features a survey of Tadeusz Ba rucki’s writings, lectures and talks on architecture, addressed to both professionals and the general public. The hundredth birthday of Tadeusz Barucki coincides with another special anniversary - the centenary of the foundation of the Silesian Library (Biblioteka Śląska) in Katowice, which is the publisher of this book. It is thus a serendipitous occasion to celebrate together the centenary of a major public institution dedicated to gathering and promoting knowledge and enhancing research, and that of a renowned architectural researcher and educator. It also constitutes an encounter between two parallel bi ographies that contributed to the shaping of Polish culture in the twentieth century. We should add here that this is not their first such encounter. Tadeusz Barucki’s friendships with Silesian architects have been a life-long experience. He was also a guest of the Silesian Library, when the Institute of Architecture Documentation organised his lecture and exhibition World architects on archi tecture in 2016. Last, but not least,
our Institute produced a biographical film on him as part of a series of film portraits of architects. Thus it is that we present here a book which is a birthday gift from the Library to its renowned coeval. This is what makes this book so exceptional.
