NICOLAE IORGA. 150 DE ANI DE LA NAȘTERE NICOLAE IORGA. 150 YEARS FROM HIS BIRTH The National· Museum of Romanian History honours the great Romanian scholar Nicolae lorga (1871-1940) at 150 years from his birth, through an exceptional· exhibition based on the collection lorga-Pippidi, donated to the Museum by Professor Andrei Pippidi, a grandson of Nicolae lorga. The precious collection comprises items exhibited for the first time (the great historian s birth certificate, his grammar, secondary and high school· certificates, as well as his doctorate diploma; Doctor Honoris Causa diplomas awarded to him by some of the greatest European universities; the orders conferred to him, with their certificates, from Romanian ones, such as the Order Carol I and the collar of the Order Ferdinand I, to foreign ones, like the Legion of Honour, Grand Cross, France, the Order of the Saviour, Grand Cross, Greece, the Order of the Crown of Italy, Grand Cross, The Order of Vytautas the Great, Grand Cross, Lithuania, the Order of St. James of the Sword, Grand Cross, Portugal and many others). There will also be displayed: private and official· letters received by the great historian from members of the Romanian royal· family (Queen Marie, Prince and then King Carol II, Princesses Mărioara and Elena) and correspondence from various personalities of the time or from common peopÌe; photographs; the portrait of Ecaterina lorga by Rudolf Schweitzer Cumpăna. Moreover, the exhibition features clothing and personal items, pieces of furniture, his employment file at the University of Bucharest, a pair
of glasses and one of lorga s pens, objects that are found in the collections of the National Museum of Romanian History, the Nicolae lorga Institute of the Romanian Academy, the Museum of the University of Bucharest, and photographs from the collection of the National Archives of Romania. Born on 5 June 1871, lorga was a prodigy child, who taught his schooimates, a brilliant, but rebellious teenager, an eminent Romanian scholarship student at the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris, a doctor of the University of Leipzig, a university professor at the age of 24. 52
NICOLAE IORGA. 150 DE ANI DE LA NAȘTERE The reÌationship of NicoÍae Iorga with the Romanian royai family oscillated between mutual esteem and a sincere affection towards Queen Marie, the Prince and then King Carol Princesses Mărioara, Ileana and Elena. King Carol I s filo-German inclinations prevented lorga from becoming dose to him and the meetings between the King and the historian remained only punctilious. King Ferdinand I admired and valued Nicolae lorga as a historian, professor, academician, but not as a politician. He never gave him any chance to become part of a cabinet, considering him too harsh and little willing to make political compromises, lorga had a weakness for King Carol II, who entrusted him the government of the country during the hardest times of the economic crisis and whose never listened to advisor he was until the abdication in September 1940, although lorga never gave up on the King. The long lasting conflict with the main representatives of the Romanian far right movement, which resorted to assassinations and intimidation, brought him his death. Despite the numerous threats received in 1940, he refused to leave Romania. On 27 September 1940, a Legionnaries commando seized him from his home, under the pretext of a judicial inquiring. His body was found the next day pierced by bullets. The murder terrified the whole world. 150 years from his birth, the work and activity of Nicolae lorga are structural parts of the national· history and heritage, and the present exhibition is meantto present hiscomplex personality and outstanding contributions.

NICOLAE IORGA. 150 DE ANI DE LA NAȘTERE From his first marriage he had four children and from his second, with Ecaterina (Catinca) Bogdan, five. Ecaterina Iorga supported and helped the great historian with his huge workload his entire life. Nicolae lorga was the first Romanian historian whose books entered the great libraries of the world, were read, commented upon and appreciated. He was a pioneer in Romanian historiography, making the transition from history told as a story, to that based on researching and analysing archival documents. He studied and wrote enormously, ca. 20,000 books, studies and artides, he was a journalist and publisher of periodicals, a playwright, an editor of historical documents, a member of the Romanian Academy, the director of various research institutes which he founded with great efforts, a professor at the Sorbonne, in France. Nicolae lorga prided himself with being a professor at the Faculty of Letters (Humanistic Studies) of the Bucharest University and a Romanian historian, considering the positions, which he held throughout his career as transient. His university career also involved the education of young officers and economists, as he taught at the High School of War and at the Commercial Academy in Bucharest. Nicolae lorga was a founder of publications as well as of institutions. He understood the importance of alphabetization and of the elevation of the Romanian people through culture. He founded and edited during several decades newspapers and magazines for the common people as well as for highly educated elites. He entered politics
to protect the rights of the many and took responsi bi lity for the failure of his Cabinet, when he could not help those who needed him. He founded libraries and popular athenaeums, the Popular University in Vălenii de Munte, research institutes in Romania (the Institute for South-Eastern European Studies, the Nicolae lorga Cultural Foundation for Students, the Institute for Byzantine Studies, the Institute for the Study of European History) and cultural institutions abroad (The Romanian Schooi in Fontenay-aux-Roses, Casa Romena in Venice, the Romanian Archaeological Institute in Saranda, Albania). Nicolae lorga collaborated with the most important European historians of his time, such as Charles Bémont, Henri Grégoire, Henri Focidon, Charles Diehl, Harold Temperley, Steve Runciman, Afi Lombard, Angelo Pernice, Vittorio Lazzarini, Ferdinand Lot, Robert William Seaton-Watson. 53
NICOLAE IORGA. 150 DE ANI DE LA NAȘTERE He was a corresponding member of the Serbian Academy (1908), honorific member of the Reale Deputazione di Storia Patria, Venice (1911), corresponding member of Ateneo Veneto (1912), of the French Institute - Académie des inscriptions et belles lettres (1919), of the Swedish Academy (1923), of the Polish Academy in Cracow (1928), of the Academia Nazionale dei Lincei (1931), of the Czech Academy (1931), of the Academia degli Arcadi ֊ Rome (1932), associated member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles lettres in Paris (1932), corresponding member of the San Lazzaro Armenian Academy in Venice (1934), of the Polish Academy (1935), of the Stanislas Academy in Nancy (1936), of the Chilean Academy (1937), member of various societies and committees: the historical· one in Lvov, the one for Byzantine Studies in Athens, the Stavíc Institutes in London and Prague. Having entered politics in 1907, after the peasants revolt, he founded a party with anti-Semitic program, the Democratic Nationalist Party, which intended to reform the Romanian society, firstly through an agrarian reform and the nationalization of industry, but also by introducing the universal vote, including for women. He left the party when his moderated views were shadowed by extremism and calls to violence. He continued his political activity by closing alliances, running parties, being elected senator and deputy several times, being appointed President of the Council of Ministers during the economic crisis in 1931 and 1932. He was a member of the Crown Council and a Royal
advisor. 54
