KHRESHCHATYK RECONSTRUCTION IN THE ARCHITECTURAL GRAPHICS COLLECTIONS: A STREET WE DO NOT KNOW (short annotation) The formation of the modern architec tural appearance of Khreshchatyk Street in Kyiv dates back to the last quarter of the 19th century, and several of these old buildings have survived to this day. Of course, in the years ahead the appearance of the buildings changed, new ones were constructed in stead of the old ones. However, events soon took place, which resulted the main street of the Ukrainian capital to turn into ruins actually. In the history of the catastrophic destruction of Khreshchatyk, researchers distinguish two stages, which are conven tionally called “military” and “peaceful”. The first one is related to the events of 1941, when structures on Khreshchatyk and adjacent streets were destroyed during direct hostil ities, and even more - due to diversions of Soviet troops, when after their retreat from Kyiv buildings were blown up and set on fire, and due to sabotage in extinguishing the fire another part of the buildings was destroyed by the Germans in order to stop its spread. Shortly after the renewal of Soviet power in Kyiv in 1943, the second stage of the build ings destruction on Khreshchatyk began, which survived in the form of “boxes” and could be rebuilt. However, the authorities decided otherwise, so such structures were also dismantled. The Soviet authorities faced the ques tion of restoring Kyiv’s main street, and the question of Khreshchatyk reconstruction was both purely utilitarian and in a great er degree ideological. In fact,
the complete ly destroyed buildings in the center of the European city made it possible to form the face of Khreshchatyk from the position of the “canonical” appearance of the main street of the Soviet city. According to the So viet authorities, this issue was to be resolved by a competition for the best project of the Khreshchatyk reconstruction, which was announced by a separate resolution of the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR on June 22,1944, the anniversary of Germa ny’s attack on the Soviet Union. Although well-known Soviet architects were invited to take part in the competition, other architects who could submit their own designs to the competition were allowed to participate. Such openness, despite the clear ideological orientation of the idea of the competition and the list of reconstruction sites that were to appear on Khreshchatyk, as well as the potential opportunity to cre ate something new, bright and majestic on the site of the war-lorn street, contributed to the rise of creative thought, therefore, the projects submitted to the competition jury show the image of the alternative Khresh chatyk that the participants imagined. Often the architectural design surpassed the tech nical capabilities, so the jury had a difficult task to select from a large number of works the prize ones. The exhibition was called to “assist” the jury “in order to widely promote among the workers the activities of the USSR cities reconstruction”, because the partici pants had to submit both text (explanatory note) and graphic parts. So the last part was presented to
the views of “workers”. Considering the proposed design solu tions, the jury members came to the con clusion that in each of them the individual elements were done very well, while others
were found to be wrong and unsuccessful. Therefore, it became clear that it is not pos sible to confidently prefer any one project, because each needed significant elaboration and improvement, and optimally the final project should combine the most success ful architectural solutions of other partici pants. In the end, it w as decided to continue w?ork on establishing the final form of the Khreshchatyk reconstruction project. The consequence of this decision was the second round of the competition. Groups of architects led by Oleksandr Vlasov and Olcksii Tatsii were to take part in the contest. Both architects presented to the jury the projects developed by them, taking into account the comments of the previous stage of the competition. Surprisingly, these tw o options of Khreshchatyk reconstruction, which provoked a lively discussion among the jury members, were still not supported unanimously. And the attempt to propose a “merger” of two architectural groups willi different visions of the future appearance of Khreshchatyk to develop a “joint” project was unsuccessful. Given the pressure from the Soviet au thorities, who sought to speed up the pro cess of rebuilding the main street of the capital, due to the ideological needs of rap id “socialist construction”, the rebuilding process was reduced to designing individ ual buildings under the draft master plan of Khreshchatyk reconstruction, adopted in 1949. But at this stage a number of complet ed building projects remained unrealized too. So the appearance of Khreshchatyk, w?hat it could be, is different from what
it be came. In this book, wc have tried to recre ate the architects’ vision of the appearance of Khreshchatyk, which we do not know7. Graphic works, which, unfortunately, have not been completely preserved, are intend ed to help in this. The fact is that in the second half of the 1940s, the competition did not envisage the task of preserving all the presented pro jects, only those that won prizes or those that the jury offered for purchase were to be retained. The rest of the graphic projects were returned to the participants. There fore, currently the graphic part is in the collections of various institutions - the Me morial Museum of Academician Volodymyr Zabolotnyi in Pcreiaslav, the V. H. Zabolotnyi State Scientific Architectural and Construc tion Library and the National Conservation Area “St. Sophia of Kyiv” in Kyiv, as w ell as in private hands (0. Tatsii family archive). And the text part (explanatory notes, min utes of meetings), though not completely, is in Central State Archives of Supreme Bodies of Pow7er and Government of Ukraine (Kyiv). Therefore, after careful work to identify graphic and written sources, w7e made an attempt to comprehensively reveal the his tory of the competition and represent the submitted works. The book is also accom panied by an architectural graphics works catalog on competitive and post-competi tive design, preserved in the collections of the National Conservation Area “St. Sophia of Kyiv”, w7hich is the initiator of this publi cation on the history of Ukrainian architec ture.
