Shakespeare and the Elizabethan Reformation: Literary Negotiation of Religiom Difference explores how Shakespeare's plays dramatize kev issues of the Reformation, tire conflict of Catholic. Protestant, and secular. The Catholic sacred is shadowed by superstition. Protestant critique by its unintended consequences, the secular by disenchantment. Each plav imagines a possible but flawed reconciliation of these competing currents and thus serves as a model for our times. Shakespeare's historv plays respond to the primal trauma of “the stripping of the altars," and attempt to reconcile the old and new orders, while the comedies carry the issues into erotic themes, miracles, contemplative lite, idolatry, patriarchy, wit, and comic versions of reconciliation. But these fragile responses come apart in the tragedies. Hamlet and its complexities need to be understood as Shakespeare's climactic Elizabethan diagnosis of the hidden trauma of the Reformation. |
