Zusammenfassung: | Maestro Nagano and the Orchestre symphonique de Montreal celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Montreal metro system. The program features world premieres of works by José Evangelista and Robert Normandeau. Under the baton of its music director Kent Nagano, the OSM opens the concert with the world premiere of José Evangelista's Accelerando--a work commissioned by the OSM to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Montreal metro. The cellist Truls Mørk then performs Schumann's Cello Concerto in A Major, a cornerstone of the Romantic repertoire for cello. Next comes another world premiere commissioned by the OSM, an electroacoustic work by Robert Normandeau that is broadcast with the accompaniment of a video projection created by Frederic Lemelin. Maestro Nagano closes the concert with Ein Heldenleben (A Hero's Life), a symphonic poem by Richard Strauss. This season, an octobasse is joining the Orchestre symphonique de Montreal, making them the only modern orchestra currently featuring the instrument. Measuring almost four meters tall, the octobasse is the largest and the lowest member of the string instrument family. For ten years, Kent Nagano dreamed of incorporating this rare instrument into his orchestra: "With the eagerly-awaited addition of an octobasse to our orchestra--an historic member of the string family that has been absent for years from the modern scene, and was favored by numerous composers such as Berlioz--we move toward the ideal manner of performing great works of the 19th century repertoire. We are excited to present this fascinating instrument to our audiences [...]." |
