They have helped us to gain a special insight into the works of Bartok, Chopin, Shostakovich, Debussy, Fauré, Mendelssohn, Ravel, and more recently Mozart and Schubert. During these music lessons, Jean-François Zygel presents the composers' works, providing his own piano accompaniment, and is often joined by musicians. In this way he enables his audience to (re)discover part of the classical music repertoire from the inside, in a manner which is both fun and original. Chopin -- Chopin et la mélodie Accompanied by the cellist François Salque, Jean-François Zygel gives another Music Lesson dedicated to Chopin. He presents the melodic formulas of the romantic melodist by analysing his musical composition and language. "From his youngest age, the richness of his improvisation was astonishing. Yet he did not flaunt it; however, the lucky few who heard him improvise for hours in the most wonderful manner, without him ever playing anything that resembled another composer's work or without him ever using anything from any of his own works, would agree that his finest compositions are simply reflections and echoes of his improvisations. This spontaneous inspiration was an endless torrent of precious, bubbling materials. From time to time, the master drew several cups of these to throw them into his mould, and it so happened that the cups were filled with pearls and rubies." Julian Fontana |
