Zusammenfassung: | This paper analyzes the role of the hermit Jordan of Quedlinburg (c. 1300-c. 1380), also known as Jordan of Saxony, in the creation of the new biography of Saint Augustine, produced by the Augustinian Order from the fourteenth century onwards. Among Jordan’s texts, which, with few exceptions, formed an important point of reference with regard to the identity and self-awareness of the Order until the mid-fifteenth century, a key role may be attributed to the Collectanea Augustiniana, a fundamental set of texts presented in Paris in 1343. Relying on the authority of the so-called Sermones ad fratres in eremo, in the Collectanea, Jordan presented a new overview of the life of Augustine together with the Metrum pro dipingenda vita Sancti Augustini. This is a unique selection of 48 episodes intended for the design of painted cycles of Augustine’s life, each provided with a brief description and the accompanying tituli. It is clearly a ‘oriented’ selection, which highlights the key moments of the saint’s new biography and it confirms the focus of the Hermits - and of Jordan in particular - for the dissemination of their own version of the story through the use of images. |
