This work consists of six separate essays which constitute six chapters on the world of Germanic peoples during the Roman Iron Age. Its purpose is to scrutinize those tribal groups which, at that time, inhabit ed the eastern and south-eastern boundaries of the Germanic world, e.g. the Marcomanni, Quadi, Hasdingi, Gepids and the Goths. The author of this work mainly aims to try and specify their location, define their relations with Rome and their closest neighbours, and in particular to endeavour to identify the place of a given tribe within the archaeological culture it is associated with it. The author’s method for this goal attainment consists in a critical analysis of both strictly historical and archaeological sources treated autonomously in the research process, and in the nal conclusions - complementarily. Therefore, the “Introduction” contains an indepth analysis of the Siedlungsarchäologie meth od developed by G. Kossinna (1911) which formerly constituted the key to the cultural-settlement-ethnic research (and which is still used by some archaeo logists). The author employs the conclusions and results obtained from this analysis in further parts of his work, while in his own research he particularly takes into account the qualitative (case study) and, albeit to a lesser extent, qu - antitative factors, avoiding what he calls an “explanatory conformity”. Chapter I. The paper presents several Marcomannic and Quadian rulers, including one queen. Owing to the fragmentary and poor state of preserva tion of the ancient sources, only a partial view on the topic is presented. The only exception was made to the person of king Maroboduus whose reign was quite well documented by the Roman writers. The list is opened by Tudrus, a semi-hypothetical person, and closed by Fritigil, the queen of Marcomanni who, together with her people, accepted the Christian faith from St. Ambrose of Milan. Additionally, the list of the rulers is completed by a Suebian king - Valao, representing the tribe of Naristae, who were neighbors with the Marcomanni and the Quadi (see Annex). Chapter II. The aim of the author of this article is to present the develop ment of greater influence of the Gepids on the Wielbark culture and, in the late Roman Iron Age - after the Goths’ moving to Oium - their full identification with that culture. Consecutive relocations and migrations of the Gepids, which started with their departure from Pomerania, were, in the author’s opinion, a kind of stimuli for reaching their ethnic distinct character and building their own identity. It established itself fully when the Goths “departed” from the Summary 131 territory of the Wielbark culture to create two new cultures: Cherniachov and Sântana de Mureș. This kind of conclusion is further justifed by the correct interpenetration of the Jordanes’ topos about three ships seen as a metaphor applied for determining the order in which the Goths and the Gepids pene trated the South. Chapter III. This chapter presents a reconstructed course of the events where the protagonist is the tribe of Vandals-Hasdingi, pushed out from their native lands in Masovia and Podlasie by some representatives of the Wielbark culture ֊ most likely by the Goths. The author acknowledges in this context a brutal and, most likely, a sanguinary event rather than an extended in time process of acculturation. The result was an emergence of the Hasdingi (171 CE) in the area of the upper Tisza, near the border with Dacia. There, the newcomers, representing the Przeworsk culture, interacted with both the local Free Dacian tribes (the Costoboci and the Lacringi) and the Romans, by whom they were finally granted the status of a “client-state”. A coexistence with the in digenous Dacian people mixed with the Roman influence led to the formation of a new cultural quality, which becomes their indicator, i.e. the Blažice-Bereg culture (see Chapter IV). Therefore, the central thesis put forward by the author is that, irregardless the far-reaching cultural changes and the coexistence with the Dacian ethnos, the Hasdingi did not lose their tribal identity, but on the contrary - it was strengthened and grounded, as their history showed. Chapter IV. A Hungarian archaeologist, D. Csallany, was first who noticed the distinctiveness of the Blažice-Bereg culture materials while studying the settlement in Beregsurány where he discovered numerous workshops pro ducing high-quality stamped pottery. Similar artefacts and features were soon discovered in the vicinal areas, i.e. in eastern Slovakia, northwestern Romania and Transcarpathian Ukraine. Taken together, they enabled the author of this work to defi ne the extent, contents and chronology of the phenomenon that he referred to as the Blažice-Bereg culture. It was formed from a com - bination of elements of the Dacian and Przeworsk cultures, with a large share of cultural currents coming from the Roman Dacia. The time of its existence ranges from phase Cla to DI, which in terms of absolute dating covers the period from the end of the second century to the beginning of the fifth century. Chapter V. Vibilius was the ruler of the Suebian tribe of the Hermunduri in habiting the Bohemian Lowland. The historical sources do not dwell too much upon this fact but some mentions contained in them discuss the extraordinary dinàmics of its actions, and this proved to be effective - as a rule. The main rea son of this was the constant support given by the Romans for whom he played the role of a king - a client associated with the so calledfoedus iniquum. It was also for that reason why he, for his own sake and for the sake of his patrons, several times interfered with affairs of neighbouring tribes of the Marcomanii and Quadi. Besides, he regulated the situation after the downfall of the Mar bod and was one of the major perpetrators of the downfall of Vannius. The 132 Plemienny świat Germanów study ends with the author’s hypothesis dealing with the fact that „the Ger manic king” who presented four tonnes of raw amber to the ceasar Neron was exactly Vibilius. He also certainly contributed to the realisation of the Roman exploratory-trade excursion, which reached the very coasts of Baltic and luckily returned to Italy. Chapter VI. The aim of the present chapter is to polemize with professor Jerzy Kolendos views on the localization and identification of the tribe of Buri, whom the researcher mentioned above connects with the branch of the Lugii called the Lugii Buri and situates them on the present-day boarder territory of Romania, the Ukraine and Slovakia. The author of the present paper has formulated several counter-arguments against such a move. He, for example, excludes the possibility of connecting the Lugii Buri with the Buri, if only be cause of the distance separating these two tribes which distance was due to the fact that Lugii Buri lived near the “western” and not “eastern” springs of the Vistula. Similarly, the ascribing of the Przeworsk culture in the territory of the river basin of the upper Tisza must be questioned because, in keeping with Tacitus’ statement, they belonged, like the Marcomanni, Naristi and Quadi to the Suebian tribes and created the northeasternly flank. Following this thesis, the author quotes the data of the settlement marked on the map by J. Beljak. The conclusion drawn from them remains compatible with the result of the analysis of the written sources and it allows, in a fairly certain method to loca lize the Buri in the upper river-basin of Ipola, directly to the north of the Mátra mountains.

This work consists of six separate essays which constitute six chapters on the world of Germanic peoples during the Roman Iron Age. Its purpose is to scrutinize those tribal groups which, at that time, inhabit ed the eastern and south-eastern boundaries of the Germanic world, e.g. the Marcomanni, Quadi, Hasdingi, Gepids and the Goths. The author of this work mainly aims to try and specify their location, define their relations with Rome and their closest neighbours, and in particular to endeavour to identify the place of a given tribe within the archaeological culture it is associated with it. The author’s method for this goal attainment consists in a critical analysis of both strictly historical and archaeological sources treated autonomously in the research process, and in the nal conclusions - complementarily. Therefore, the “Introduction” contains an indepth analysis of the Siedlungsarchäologie meth od developed by G. Kossinna (1911) which formerly constituted the key to the cultural-settlement-ethnic research (and which is still used by some archaeo logists). The author employs the conclusions and results obtained from this analysis in further parts of his work, while in his own research he particularly takes into account the qualitative (case study) and, albeit to a lesser extent, qu - antitative factors, avoiding what he calls an “explanatory conformity”. Chapter I. The paper presents several Marcomannic and Quadian rulers, including one queen. Owing to the fragmentary and poor state of preserva tion of the ancient sources, only a partial view on the topic is presented. The only exception was made to the person of king Maroboduus whose reign was quite well documented by the Roman writers. The list is opened by Tudrus, a semi-hypothetical person, and closed by Fritigil, the queen of Marcomanni who, together with her people, accepted the Christian faith from St. Ambrose of Milan. Additionally, the list of the rulers is completed by a Suebian king - Valao, representing the tribe of Naristae, who were neighbors with the Marcomanni and the Quadi (see Annex). Chapter II. The aim of the author of this article is to present the develop ment of greater influence of the Gepids on the Wielbark culture and, in the late Roman Iron Age - after the Goths’ moving to Oium - their full identification with that culture. Consecutive relocations and migrations of the Gepids, which started with their departure from Pomerania, were, in the author’s opinion, a kind of stimuli for reaching their ethnic distinct character and building their own identity. It established itself fully when the Goths “departed” from the Summary 131 territory of the Wielbark culture to create two new cultures: Cherniachov and Sântana de Mureș. This kind of conclusion is further justifed by the correct interpenetration of the Jordanes’ topos about three ships seen as a metaphor applied for determining the order in which the Goths and the Gepids pene trated the South. Chapter III. This chapter presents a reconstructed course of the events where the protagonist is the tribe of Vandals-Hasdingi, pushed out from their native lands in Masovia and Podlasie by some representatives of the Wielbark culture ֊ most likely by the Goths. The author acknowledges in this context a brutal and, most likely, a sanguinary event rather than an extended in time process of acculturation. The result was an emergence of the Hasdingi (171 CE) in the area of the upper Tisza, near the border with Dacia. There, the newcomers, representing the Przeworsk culture, interacted with both the local Free Dacian tribes (the Costoboci and the Lacringi) and the Romans, by whom they were finally granted the status of a “client-state”. A coexistence with the in digenous Dacian people mixed with the Roman influence led to the formation of a new cultural quality, which becomes their indicator, i.e. the Blažice-Bereg culture (see Chapter IV). Therefore, the central thesis put forward by the author is that, irregardless the far-reaching cultural changes and the coexistence with the Dacian ethnos, the Hasdingi did not lose their tribal identity, but on the contrary - it was strengthened and grounded, as their history showed. Chapter IV. A Hungarian archaeologist, D. Csallany, was first who noticed the distinctiveness of the Blažice-Bereg culture materials while studying the settlement in Beregsurány where he discovered numerous workshops pro ducing high-quality stamped pottery. Similar artefacts and features were soon discovered in the vicinal areas, i.e. in eastern Slovakia, northwestern Romania and Transcarpathian Ukraine. Taken together, they enabled the author of this work to defi ne the extent, contents and chronology of the phenomenon that he referred to as the Blažice-Bereg culture. It was formed from a com - bination of elements of the Dacian and Przeworsk cultures, with a large share of cultural currents coming from the Roman Dacia. The time of its existence ranges from phase Cla to DI, which in terms of absolute dating covers the period from the end of the second century to the beginning of the fifth century. Chapter V. Vibilius was the ruler of the Suebian tribe of the Hermunduri in habiting the Bohemian Lowland. The historical sources do not dwell too much upon this fact but some mentions contained in them discuss the extraordinary dinàmics of its actions, and this proved to be effective - as a rule. The main rea son of this was the constant support given by the Romans for whom he played the role of a king - a client associated with the so calledfoedus iniquum. It was also for that reason why he, for his own sake and for the sake of his patrons, several times interfered with affairs of neighbouring tribes of the Marcomanii and Quadi. Besides, he regulated the situation after the downfall of the Mar bod and was one of the major perpetrators of the downfall of Vannius. The 132 Plemienny świat Germanów study ends with the author’s hypothesis dealing with the fact that „the Ger manic king” who presented four tonnes of raw amber to the ceasar Neron was exactly Vibilius. He also certainly contributed to the realisation of the Roman exploratory-trade excursion, which reached the very coasts of Baltic and luckily returned to Italy. Chapter VI. The aim of the present chapter is to polemize with professor Jerzy Kolendos views on the localization and identification of the tribe of Buri, whom the researcher mentioned above connects with the branch of the Lugii called the Lugii Buri and situates them on the present-day boarder territory of Romania, the Ukraine and Slovakia. The author of the present paper has formulated several counter-arguments against such a move. He, for example, excludes the possibility of connecting the Lugii Buri with the Buri, if only be cause of the distance separating these two tribes which distance was due to the fact that Lugii Buri lived near the “western” and not “eastern” springs of the Vistula. Similarly, the ascribing of the Przeworsk culture in the territory of the river basin of the upper Tisza must be questioned because, in keeping with Tacitus’ statement, they belonged, like the Marcomanni, Naristi and Quadi to the Suebian tribes and created the northeasternly flank. Following this thesis, the author quotes the data of the settlement marked on the map by J. Beljak. The conclusion drawn from them remains compatible with the result of the analysis of the written sources and it allows, in a fairly certain method to loca lize the Buri in the upper river-basin of Ipola, directly to the north of the Mátra mountains.
