Beschreibung: | Im Vorwort: "The Loeb Scriptores Historiae Augustae by David M. Magie was published in three volumes in 1921, 1924, and 1932. In this revision I have benefited from the enormous advances in our understanding of this highly unusual collection of imperial biographies over the last century. Even the title itself has changed: Scriptores Historiae Augustae, which suggested that it was a collection of six different writers, is now Historia Augusta, reflecting the universal consensus that the work is the creation of a single author ... I have made substantial revisions of the translation, which was in a style archaic even for its time. Magie placed a premium on maintaining the word order and sentence structure of the Latin, which yielded a style that can appear confusing or affected to the modern ear. I pursued a more straightforward English style that seeks to reproduce the bluntness and sometimes even the awkwardness of the original. I also translated more clearly certain passages of a sexual nature that the conventions of Magie’s times had obscured. Many of Magie’s notes remain valuable, and I have added others that reflect more recent scholarship. I eliminated some numismatic and epigraphic information that seemed more appropriate for a specialized academic audience. In general, basic information about the lives and careers of emperors is far more readily available to readers, online and elsewhere, so I have tried to limit the notes to information particular to the text." |
