SUMMARY In 1990, on the construction site of an apartment building No. 42 in Krupskaya Street, the area of 1.5 thousand square meters was explored. The excavation site was located on the necropolis of Panticapaeum on the northern slope of Mount Mithridates in a rectangle formed by Shlagbaumskaya, Krupskaya (former Institutskaya) and Hospitalnaya streets. It is located just 100-150 m to the east of the ground graves excavated by Shkorpil V.V. in 1903. Thirty two ground burials were found. Most of them were neither robbed nor destroyed in the course of economic activity in the 19th - first half of the 20th centuries. All burial structures were of the same type - ground graves. They represent rectangular pits of various depths, with more or less rounded corners. The shape of the grave is often difficult to determine due to its poorly and indistinctly preserved walls. Twenty graves out of thirty two ones had overlaps of stone slabs. In most cases, these are rough limestone slabs of irregular shape, the average thickness of which was 0.15-0.20 m. However, in some cases, the slabs were hacked or even sawn and had a sub-rectangular shape. In Panticapaeum, as in other Bosporan cities, two types of burial rites coexisted in parallel. There were inhumation and cremation. Inhumation prevailed significantly. In the necropolis on the northern slope of Mount Mithridates, only a small number of cases of cremations in Roman times were recorded. In 1990, only one cremation was revealed - in the grave No. 21. The absolutely predominant burial rite in the lst-2nd centuries was inhumation. The
deceased was placed in a grave pit stretched out on his back, with arms and legs extended along the body. There are some deviations from the usual position. They are insignificant and most often concern the position of the hands. It should also be noted that due to the poor 218 I Еишигигигыи preservation of the bones, it is difficult to determine the position of the deceased in some graves. On the investigated site of the necropolis, the eastern orientation of the buried was noted for twenty graves. In four cases (graves nos. 1, 2, 10, 11) various deviations from the latitudinal orientation were marked. In seven graves, the skeletons were oriented north-south (graves nos. 7, 9, 13, 17, 18, 21, 25), and in most cases they were placed with their heads to the south, i.e. up the mountainside. Such a meridional orientation, from the point of view of some researchers, is one of the elements of local influence on the Hellenic burial rite. In most of the graves, grave goods have been found. These are red-lacquered and simple earthenware vessels, primarily jugs and bowls, as well as a large number of various glass jugs and small bottles ֊ balsamaria. Also noteworthy are various beads, pieces of sheet gold - «trefoils», sewn on plaques, various earrings and rings with carved stones. Analysis of the grave goods did not show any sharp differences in age and gender. Perhaps this is due to the poor preservation of the osteological material and the repeated use of the graves for burials, which in some cases made it difficult to determine the sex of the burials. However, in some cases, the
set of objects found in the grave gives a complete picture of the field and occupations of the deceased. Based on the analysis of the burial inventory of burials, the functioning of the investigated section of the necropolis can be attributed to the 1st - mid2nd centuries AD. In general, the following features of the funeral rite are most typical for the population who left graves on the site of the Panticapaeum necropolis investigated in 1990 on the northern slope of Mount Mithridates: the predominance of inhumation over cremation; in some
cases, reburial of skeletal bones; the use of wooden coffins, and sometimes sarcophagi; predominance of elongated postures of the buried: different orientations of the buried with a predominance of latitudinal; supplying the deceased with personal attire, amulets, toilet articles, ceramic and glass vessels; occasionally with tools of labor. All these features show that the funeral rite found in the graves on the excavated site does not differ from the funeral rite that existed among the population of the capital of the Bosporus and is known from the excavations on the northern slope of Mount Mithridates made by Shkorpil V.V. at the beginning of the twentieth century. Necropolis of Panticapaeum in the lst-2nd centuries AD reflected the era of the economic upturn of the city and the growth of the well-being of the population. The presence of gold jewelry, among which pieces of sheet gold - «trefoils», sewn on plaques, various earrings and rings with carved stones are common, testifies to the greater economic well-being of the townspeople in comparison with the previous time. At the same time, as in earlier eras, the necropolis on the northern slope of Mount Mithridates in the 1st2nd centuries AD was a necropolis of ordinary citizens of the capital of the Bosporus. In the overwhelming majority they were Bosporan Greeks, known from written sources as Bosporans or Bosporan citizens. In conclusion, it should be specially noted that the burial complexes presented by us seem to be the only and in their own unique cases in the last hundred years of study of this necropolis of
Panticapaeum on the northern slope of Mount Mithridates, where not looted ground graves have been completely investigated on an area of 1.5 thousand square meters. During the next three decades of excavations in small undeveloped areas of the northern slope of the Mithridates ridge, all the discovered underground crypts and single earth graves had traces of repeated robberies and destruction. All this indicates that the territory of the Panticapaeum necropolis on the northern slope of Mount Mithridates, completely built up with private houses by now, has been largely lost to science, which ultimately prompted the authors to publish the results of the 1990 security and rescue research in full.
