Zusammenfassung:At the turn of the eighteenth century, it was mainly the sons of German princes who travelled around Europe during their Prinzenreise. The French royal court was a highly prized destination. The welcome given and honours shown to the German princes – often expressed in expensive gifts – was an indicator of their home territory’s ranking within a competitive aristocratic society. There were partisans of France within the German aristocracy, but also dynasties who tried to gain recognition but were politically reserved towards France.
