Beschreibung: | Impressum: This catalogue accompanies the exhibition of the same name at Nicholas Hall from March 31-May 20, 2022 "Nicholas Hall is pleased to present All That Glistens at its gallery space at 17 E 76 Street, New York. The exhibition brings together a diverse selection of paintings on copper spanning the 16th to 18th century, from when the practice flourished to when it conspicuously fell out of fashion. The exhibition features loans from museum and private collections, led by the Arnot Art Museum and The Leiden Collection. It offers an opportunity to examine the ways in which European artists explored the jewel-like visual effects achieved by painting on this metal. Highlights of the exhibition include a masterpiece by Jan Brueghel the Elder, The Flemish Fair, lent by the Arnot Art Museum, New York. The painting was acquired by the founder, Matthias Arnot, from the Hamilton Palace sale at Christie’s in 1882 and is possibly the first work by Jan Brueghel to come to the United States. Another centerpiece is the Interior of the Linder Gallery with Personifications of Pictura and Disegno, painted in the late 1620s in Milan by an anonymous Flemish artist. Also on view are works by Jan van Kessel and Jan Brueghel the Elder, whose intimate works on copper formed a key part of Federico Borromeo’s Pinacoteca Ambrosiana and influenced Milanese artists of the 17th century, represented in the exhibition by Francesco del Cairo and Giulio Cesare Procaccini. Other works on view, by artists ranging from Jacopo Zucchi, Lavinia Fontana, Alessandro Turchi, Guido Reni, Giuseppe Maria Crespi and Francesco Solimena, showcase the widespread practice of painting on copper across Italy." -- Nicholas Hall website |
