Drawing on political philosophy, political economy and empirical research, this book critically analyses the dynamics, culture and forms of subjectivity of neoliberalism. It revisits existing historical, sociological and cultural studies to excavate the genealogy of the capitalist subject with particular emphasis on the neoliberal governmental context of the last four decades. Michel Foucault’s notion of governmentality, initially developed in his Collège de France lectures of 1978 and 1979, is employed as a hermeneutic key to situate historically and analyse critically the regimes of subject-formation that are characteristic of neoliberal capitalism, and that signalled a transition in power from discipline to control. More specifically, the Foucauldian question that informs this book is what we are today — as knowledge workers — in relation to our present, understood as a globalizing neoliberal governmentality in which life is reduced to constant work under conditions of stealth control and constant surveillance. The study concludes by tracing the changing face of Homo economicos in respect of resistance against neo-liberal capitalism and its resultant metamorphoses. BENDA HOFMEYR is affiliated to the department of philosophy, University of Pretoria, South Africa. She lived and worked in The Netherlands while she completed her doctoral studies and postdoctoral research. She still maintains strong collaborative ties with Radboud University, Nijmegen, where she was awarded her doctoral degree in philosophy on the work of Foucault and Levinas. Her research interests fall
within the broad ambit of contemporary continental philosophy (especially thinkers following in Heidegger s footsteps, with an emphasis on post-structuralism and phenomenology), and her work testifies to an enduring fascination with the inextricable entanglement of the ethical with the political. Her thinking is informed by the interfaces between European and non-Western (especially post-colonial African) philosophy, and the possibility of dialogue across these apparently divergent yet fundamentally intertwined traditions of thought.
