Summary The Victor without laurels The future German tank ace, the warrant officer (Feldwebel) Kurt Knispel was born on 20. September 1921 as a sec ond son of the German couple Knispel: Leopold and his wife Rosa, born Dittmann, in the village Salisov (Salisfeld) in the region Jeseník (Gräfensberg). His father was a trained boiler smith and copper smith and he worked in the machinery company Hassmann. His mother stayed at home as household keeper and she helped also in the pub of her father Franz Dittmann. Kurt learned car mechanician in the close Zlaté Hory (Zuckmantel). In 1933 the Nazi party took over the power in Germany. On the end of September 1938 Czechoslovakia obtained the Munich Agreement. Kurt Knispel, Czechoslovak citizen with German nationality, became citizen of German Empire with conscription and in the spring 1940 he got summons and he was attached to the 4th company of PanzerErsatz-Abteilung 15. On May 15th, 1940 he started the training on the light tanks type PzKpfw I and PzKpfw II and he passed also a classical military training for the infantry. After this he managed the training for the loader on medium tank PzKpfw 161IV Ausf.B. In the beginning of October 1940 he has been transferred to the 3rd company of the 1st battalion (3. Kompanie 1. Abteilung) and his commander was First Lieutenant (Oberleutmant) Eckert. The unit belonged to Panzer Regiment 29 under command of Colonel (Oberst) Hans Stenglein, who was subjected to Panzer Division 12 commanded by Major General (Generalmajor) Harpe. On June, 22nd, 1941 Hitler attacked the Soviet Union. The Knispel
unit has been involved during this operation into the XXXIX. Armeekorps mot., which was part of Panzergruppe 3 commanded by General (Generaloberst) Her mann Hoth. In the first hours of the attack destroyed Knispel several soviet MG positions as well as one anti-tank cannon. During the removal of the encirclement at Bialystok he excelled by hitting of two soviet light tanks. During these combats he has been promoted to Private first class, trained soldier (Gefreiter) and he hit at least eight soviet tanks T-60. After the defeat at Stalingrad the German command managed in spring 1943 to stabilize the Eastern front in the area of the city Kursk. The combat actions started on July 4th, 1943 and the 1st company of K. Knispel attacked as a part of Panzerdivision 6 in direction Michailovka - Staryj Gorod. On the fourth day of the offensive destroyed K. Knispel seven enemy tanks T-34/76 in total. In the night from July 10th till 11th succeeded the Panzerdivision 6 with 1st company of the battalion the breakthrough in direction to Ržavec. During these fights hit the gunner Knispel twenty seven tanks T-34/76 in total and on July 24th 1943 he has been awarded by Eiserne Kreuz l.Kl. and conse quently, he was promoted to Corporal (Unteroffizier). On August 11th, 1943 the Soviet attack on Charkov has been opened. In this time had K. Knispel on his account more than sixty destroyed tanks. The number of not confirmed hits was between twenty and twenty-five. For fifty direct tank combats against the enemy he obtained Panzerkampfabzeichen 25 - 2ndClass. in spite he had more than three
hundred on his account. On May 20th, 1944, K. Knispel has been awarded for his combat merits and for destroying of 126 enemy tanks by Kriegsorden des Deutschen Kreuzes in gold. And, although several proposals for his awarding by Ritterkreuz des Eis ernen Kreuzes have been done, he never obtained this award. On June 6th, 1944, in the morning hours, the Allies started the invasion into the Western Europe. On June 16th, the Schwere Panzerabteilung 503 has been equipped by new tanks PzKpfw VI Ausf.B Tiger II in the amount of twelve pieces. After the combats in Normandy the 1st company of K. Knispel has been withdrawn on August 28 , 1944 from the combat lines to Germany and on October 9th, the unit has been shipped to Hungary. Kurt Knispel obtained first time the position of commander on the tank Tiger II with turret number 132 and he was detached to sentinel the Elisabeth bridge over Danube. The loader of their tank got unfortunately medical problems and it was necessary to replace him. On October 16th, 1944, the young Private, Prive first class (Gefreiter) from the Middle Germany, named Rudolf Barth became the member of the crew of K. Knispels tank. After the retreat fights at Nitra the tank of K. Knispel has been hit totally twenty-four times and the total overhaul was necessary. For this reason, it was decided that the machine shall be together with other machines transferred to the village Březí u Mikulova where the repair company was located. The unit has been consequently detached to Novo sedly. In the days April 24th and 25th the Soviet units have been concentrated in
the area Pasohlávky - Vlasatice. On April 30th in the morning hours started the German attack on the positions of soviet 27th Rifle Corps of Guard and 192 Į
in the area of the communities Pasohlávky - Height Hradisko - Vlasatice - Nová Ves the tank struggle took place. The German party employed during this attack the heavy tanks Tiger II. The front settled on the line Brod nad Dyjí - Pasohlávky - crossing Nová Ves - Přibice and exactly during this attack the Warrant Officer (Feldwebel) Kurt Knispel, the commander of the tank 132, who reached in the combat actions 168 confirmed victories including 42 of them as tank commander and 126 as tank gunnner, has been deadly wounded and due to this injury, he died. Nevertheless, for this statement there were missing the decisive proofs. In the days April 8th until 10th 2013 the specialists from the Historical Department of the Moravian Country Mu seum directed by Mr. Vlastimil Schildberger in co-operation with German Government organisation Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e. V. performed the excavation works in the orchard close to the cemetery in the village Vrbovec in the outskirts of Znojmo. The goal of this activity was the lifting of remains of German soldiers who died during April 1945 in the local field infirmary. The greatest event was the discovery of the remains of Kurt Knispel. There was a lot of different speculations concerning his last rest nevertheless but only the finding of one half of the identification mark with his remains meaned irrefutable certainty that Kurt Knispel succumbed here on April 30th, 1945 to heavy injuries and he has also been buried here. The stainless identification mark contains the personal number of the soldier (812), the abbreviation of
his unit (4 Pz.Ers. Abt.15 ) and also the blood group A. The remains of K. Knispel have been shipped to Brno in the Institute Anthropos of the Moravian Country Museum for the an thropological analysis. After his completion the remains have been buried with dignity on November 12th, 2014 in the German military department of the Central Cemetery in Brno. In several days the oak cross has been erected on this place with stated military rank, date of birth and date of death of K. Knispel. On June 17th, 2015, the direction of Moravian Country Museum received a letter from Germany addressed to the workers of the Historical Department who participated to the discovery of the remains of Warant-officer (.Feldwebel) Kurt Knispel. The author of this letter was exactly Mr. Rudolf Barth, who was since October 1944 loader in the tank of K. Knispel. He was witness of his death and in this letter, he described shortly this event. According his statement Kurt Knispel has really been deadly hit in his head by a shard of artillery grenade indeed on April 30th, 1945, exactly during the struggle close to the village Vlasatice in the surrounding of present water reservoir Novomlýnské nádrže. He confirmed the date as well as the location by a copy of one page in his private war diary which is kept until today. 193

In 1933 the Nazi party took over the power in Germany. On the end of September 1938 Czechoslovakia obtained the Munich Agreement. Kurt Knispel, Czechoslovak citizen with German nationality, became citizen of German Empire with conscription and in the spring 1940 he got summons and he was attached to the 4th company of PanzerErsatz-Abteilung 15. On May 15th, 1940 he started the training on the light tanks type PzKpfw I and PzKpfw II and he passed also a classical military training for the infantry. After this he managed the training for the loader on medium tank PzKpfw 161IV Ausf.B. In the beginning of October 1940 he has been transferred to the 3rd company of the 1st battalion (3. Kompanie 1. Abteilung) and his commander was First Lieutenant (Oberleutmant) Eckert. The unit belonged to Panzer Regiment 29 under command of Colonel (Oberst) Hans Stenglein, who was subjected to Panzer Division 12 commanded by Major General (Generalmajor) Harpe. On June, 22nd, 1941 Hitler attacked the Soviet Union. The Knispel
unit has been involved during this operation into the XXXIX. Armeekorps mot., which was part of Panzergruppe 3 commanded by General (Generaloberst) Her mann Hoth. In the first hours of the attack destroyed Knispel several soviet MG positions as well as one anti-tank cannon. During the removal of the encirclement at Bialystok he excelled by hitting of two soviet light tanks. During these combats he has been promoted to Private first class, trained soldier (Gefreiter) and he hit at least eight soviet tanks T-60. After the defeat at Stalingrad the German command managed in spring 1943 to stabilize the Eastern front in the area of the city Kursk. The combat actions started on July 4th, 1943 and the 1st company of K. Knispel attacked as a part of Panzerdivision 6 in direction Michailovka - Staryj Gorod. On the fourth day of the offensive destroyed K. Knispel seven enemy tanks T-34/76 in total. In the night from July 10th till 11th succeeded the Panzerdivision 6 with 1st company of the battalion the breakthrough in direction to Ržavec. During these fights hit the gunner Knispel twenty seven tanks T-34/76 in total and on July 24th 1943 he has been awarded by Eiserne Kreuz l.Kl. and conse quently, he was promoted to Corporal (Unteroffizier). On August 11th, 1943 the Soviet attack on Charkov has been opened. In this time had K. Knispel on his account more than sixty destroyed tanks. The number of not confirmed hits was between twenty and twenty-five. For fifty direct tank combats against the enemy he obtained Panzerkampfabzeichen 25 - 2ndClass. in spite he had more than three
hundred on his account. On May 20th, 1944, K. Knispel has been awarded for his combat merits and for destroying of 126 enemy tanks by Kriegsorden des Deutschen Kreuzes in gold. And, although several proposals for his awarding by Ritterkreuz des Eis ernen Kreuzes have been done, he never obtained this award. On June 6th, 1944, in the morning hours, the Allies started the invasion into the Western Europe. On June 16th, the Schwere Panzerabteilung 503 has been equipped by new tanks PzKpfw VI Ausf.B Tiger II in the amount of twelve pieces. After the combats in Normandy the 1st company of K. Knispel has been withdrawn on August 28 , 1944 from the combat lines to Germany and on October 9th, the unit has been shipped to Hungary. Kurt Knispel obtained first time the position of commander on the tank Tiger II with turret number 132 and he was detached to sentinel the Elisabeth bridge over Danube. The loader of their tank got unfortunately medical problems and it was necessary to replace him. On October 16th, 1944, the young Private, Prive first class (Gefreiter) from the Middle Germany, named Rudolf Barth became the member of the crew of K. Knispels tank. After the retreat fights at Nitra the tank of K. Knispel has been hit totally twenty-four times and the total overhaul was necessary. For this reason, it was decided that the machine shall be together with other machines transferred to the village Březí u Mikulova where the repair company was located. The unit has been consequently detached to Novo sedly. In the days April 24th and 25th the Soviet units have been concentrated in
the area Pasohlávky - Vlasatice. On April 30th in the morning hours started the German attack on the positions of soviet 27th Rifle Corps of Guard and 192 Į
in the area of the communities Pasohlávky - Height Hradisko - Vlasatice - Nová Ves the tank struggle took place. The German party employed during this attack the heavy tanks Tiger II. The front settled on the line Brod nad Dyjí - Pasohlávky - crossing Nová Ves - Přibice and exactly during this attack the Warrant Officer (Feldwebel) Kurt Knispel, the commander of the tank 132, who reached in the combat actions 168 confirmed victories including 42 of them as tank commander and 126 as tank gunnner, has been deadly wounded and due to this injury, he died. Nevertheless, for this statement there were missing the decisive proofs. In the days April 8th until 10th 2013 the specialists from the Historical Department of the Moravian Country Mu seum directed by Mr. Vlastimil Schildberger in co-operation with German Government organisation Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e. V. performed the excavation works in the orchard close to the cemetery in the village Vrbovec in the outskirts of Znojmo. The goal of this activity was the lifting of remains of German soldiers who died during April 1945 in the local field infirmary. The greatest event was the discovery of the remains of Kurt Knispel. There was a lot of different speculations concerning his last rest nevertheless but only the finding of one half of the identification mark with his remains meaned irrefutable certainty that Kurt Knispel succumbed here on April 30th, 1945 to heavy injuries and he has also been buried here. The stainless identification mark contains the personal number of the soldier (812), the abbreviation of
his unit (4 Pz.Ers. Abt.15') and also the blood group A. The remains of K. Knispel have been shipped to Brno in the Institute Anthropos of the Moravian Country Museum for the an thropological analysis. After his completion the remains have been buried with dignity on November 12th, 2014 in the German military department of the Central Cemetery in Brno. In several days the oak cross has been erected on this place with stated military rank, date of birth and date of death of K. Knispel. On June 17th, 2015, the direction of Moravian Country Museum received a letter from Germany addressed to the workers of the Historical Department who participated to the discovery of the remains of Warant-officer (.Feldwebel) Kurt Knispel. The author of this letter was exactly Mr. Rudolf Barth, who was since October 1944 loader in the tank of K. Knispel. He was witness of his death and in this letter, he described shortly this event. According his statement Kurt Knispel has really been deadly hit in his head by a shard of artillery grenade indeed on April 30th, 1945, exactly during the struggle close to the village Vlasatice in the surrounding of present water reservoir Novomlýnské nádrže. He confirmed the date as well as the location by a copy of one page in his private war diary which is kept until today. 193
