Until the fifteenth century, Saint Cecilia was perceived as one of many virgin martyrs, with no obvious musical skills or interests. During the next two centuries, however, she inspired many musical works written in her honor and a vast number of paint ings that depicted her singing or playing an instrument. John A. Rice argues that Cecilias associa tion with music came about in several stages, involving Christian liturgy, visual arts, and music. It was fostered by interactions be tween artists, musicians, and their patrons and the transfer of visual and musical tradi tions from northern Europe to Italy. Saint Cecilia in the Renaissance explores the cult of the saint from medieval times through the sixteenth century, when musicians’ guilds in the Low Countries and France first chose Cecilia as their patron. Rice then turns to music and the explosion of polyphonic vo cal works written in Cecilia’s honor by some of the most celebrated composers in Europe. He examines the wealth of visual representa tions of Cecilia especially during the Italian Renaissance, among which Raphael’s Ecstasy о/ St. Cecilia is but the most famous exam ple. Finally, he investigates the discovery in 1599, under the church in Rome that bears her name, of a body believed to be that of Cecilia herself. Thoroughly researched and beautifully illustrated in color, Saint Cecilia in the Renaissance is the definitive portrait of Saint Cecilia as a figure of musical and artis tic inspiration.
JOHN A. RIC E is a writer and teacher who has devoted much of his career to the exploration of music in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Europe. He is the author of several books, including Antonio Salieri and Viennese Opera, also published by the University of Chicago Press.
