Summary Boris and Olga Ignatovich. The Two Faces of War Photographs from the Collection of the Museum of Moscow In the autumn of 2020, the Museum of Moscow presented the exhibition “Boris and Olga Ignatovich. The Two Faces of War”, parallel stories depicted by the two photographers of the Great Patriotic War who were brother and sister. Boris and Olga Ignatovich are united by the similarity of photographic approaches, the common spirit of the time, but at the same time each of them went through their own way, having captured one of the most tragic pages in the history of the 20th century with a personal touch. For the exhibition project, more than 200 photographs were selected from the collection of the Museum of Moscow: the front line life and partisan campaigns, the liberation of the occupied territories and German concentration camps, the ceremonial portraits of Soviet military leaders and non-parade pictures of front-line soldiers and home front workers. Some of the photographs were widely published in print during the 20th century, others were first presented to the public at our 2020 exhibition. The name of Boris Ignatovich (1899-1976) is included in all publications devoted to the history of the Soviet photojournalism. But first of all, his name is associated with avant-garde photography of the 1920s and 1930s. Speaking about Olga Ignatovich (1905-1984), one usually remembers her photographs of the Soviet sports life of the 1930s and her participation in the experimental team “Ignatovich’s Brigade”, which included, besides her sisters and brother as the leader, such
prominent photographers as Eleazar Langman, Nikolay Shtertser, Yakov Brodsky. Olga was an independent brilliant master of photography, but for many years her name was in the shadow of the surname Ignatovich, at the mention of which Boris was mainly implied. She went through the Great Patriotic War as a front-line photographer. She entered the liberated Auschwitz death camp together with the advancing troops of the ist Ukrainian Front. Half a year before, she was among those who documented the horrors of Majdanek. In the post-war decades, seeing the name “Ignatovich” under the horrible images of concentration camps, experts and viewers could not even
278—279 assume that the heartbreaking pictures were taken by a woman. Our publication returns versatility to the figures of Boris and Olga Ignatovich, paying tribute to their feat of military photojournalism, and presents the discoveries made by the curators and museum staff during the preparation of the exhibition and issue. All the photographs presented in the book are reproductions of scanned original negatives by Boris and Olga Ignatovich from the collection of the Museum of Moscow. The specifics of working with photography was such that for publication on the pages of newspapers and magazines, pictures were cropped and heavily retouched, sometimes changing even the author’s composition. At exhibitions, photographers had the opportunity to present a picture in the form they themselves/personally conceived it. Thus, according to the memoirs of the Boris’ widow Claudia Ignatovich, he never trusted laboratory assistants to print his exhibition images: “How can an assistant know what I saw shooting this picture?” The preserved exhibition prints of Boris and Olga Ignatovich are now in museum and private collections around the world. However, there are original negatives kept in the collection of the Museum of Moscow. Some of them had a chance to become acknowledged exhibition works of art, others remained in the archive awaiting publication till the present days. But this is what comprises the historical value of the photographic archive of Boris and Olga Ignatovich in the collection of the Museum of Moscow: these are authentic visual documents of the real history of our and
other countries, without either cropping or retouching. The true events and faces as they were seen by the photographers, and we see the reality of wartime without any interpretations made afterwards, even by the authors themselves. Realizing the responsibility of publishing such meaningful, complex images, we decided to present positive images from the negatives of Boris and Olga Ignatovich without any cropping at all, having reduced our interference in images just to necessary technical retouching. With the same purpose — to show all the complexity of photojournalism in a war environment — we have included in the publication some adjacent shots we have in our collection. The choice between them, namely the semantic accentuation and the perfection of the photographic composition, remains with the authors. But we, being unbiased historians, only reveal to the viewer the intricate process of creating a photographic image.
