Zusammenfassung: | In Beside You in Time Elizabeth Freeman expands biopolitical and queer theory by outlining a temporal view of the long nineteenth century. Drawing on Foucauldian notions of discipline as a regime that yoked the human body to time, Freeman shows how time became a social and sensory means by which people assembled into groups in ways that resisted disciplinary forces. She tracks temporalized bodies across many entangled regimes--religion, secularity, race, historiography, health, and sexuality--and examines how those bodies act in relation to those regimes. In analyses of the use of rhythmic dance by the Shakers; African American slave narratives; literature by Mark Twain, Pauline Hopkins, Herman Melville, and others; and how Catholic sacraments conjoined people across historical boundaries, Freeman makes the case for the body as an instrument of what she calls queer hypersociality. As a mode of being in which bodies are connected to others and their histories across and throughout time, queer hypersociality, Freeman contends, provides the means for subjugated bodies to escape disciplinary regimes of time and to create new social worlds |

spelling | Freeman, Elizabeth Verfasser aut Beside You in Time Durham, NC Duke University Press 2019 1 Online-Ressource (240 Seiten) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier In Beside You in Time Elizabeth Freeman expands biopolitical and queer theory by outlining a temporal view of the long nineteenth century. As a mode of being in which bodies are connected to others and their histories across and throughout time, queer hypersociality, Freeman contends, provides the means for subjugated bodies to escape disciplinary regimes of time and to create new social worlds English Geschichte 1800-1899 gnd rswk-swf Corps humain dans la littérature Homosexualité Aspect social Littérature et société Histoire Perception du temps dans la littérature Temps Aspect social Théorie queer American literature African American authors Ethnic studies Gender studies, gender groups Homosexuality Social aspects Human body in literature Linguistics Literature and society Literature: history & criticism Queer theory Time perception in literature Time Social aspects American literature African American authors 19th century History and criticism Homosexuality Social aspects United States History 19th century Literature and society United States History 19th century Time Social aspects United States History 19th century Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Zeitbewusstsein (DE-588)4117705-8 gnd rswk-swf Literatursoziologie (DE-588)4167885-0 gnd rswk-swf Queer-Theorie (DE-588)7628620-4 gnd rswk-swf Homosexualität (DE-588)4025798-8 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf Ethnic Studies/African American Studies Gender Studies Literary Criticism Semiotics & Theory Social Science 1800-1899 United States Electronic books Criticism, interpretation, etc History USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Queer-Theorie (DE-588)7628620-4 s Literatursoziologie (DE-588)4167885-0 s Homosexualität (DE-588)4025798-8 s Zeitbewusstsein (DE-588)4117705-8 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Geschichte 1800-1899 z DE-604 https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=3118879 Verlag kostenfrei Volltext |
