Zusammenfassung: | Introduction -- Turnabout is fair play : institutional gambits at the Museum of Modern Art and Bienal in São Paulo -- Forma : the mutability of form in early abstract art and theory -- National culture and abstraction at the first São Paulo Bienal -- Collective, concrete abstractions : Grupo Ruptura and the National Exhibition of Abstract Art -- Defining modernism at the second São Paulo Bienal -- Artist as model citizen : Grupo Frente and Rio institutions -- Conclusion "Art produced outside hegemonic centers is often seen as a form of derivation or relegated to a provisional status. Forming Abstraction turns this narrative on its head. In the first book-length study of Brazilian art and culture following World War II, Adele Nelson highlights the importance of exhibitionary and pedagogical institutions in the development of abstract art in Brazil. By focusing on the formation of the São Paulo Biennial in 1951; the early activities of artists Geraldo de Barros, Lygia Clark, Waldemar Cordeiro, Hélio Oiticica, Lygia Pape, and Ivan Serpa; and the ideas of critics like Mário Pedrosa, Nelson illuminates the complex, strategic processes of citation and adaption of both local and international forms. The book ultimately demonstrates that postwar Brazilian art institutions and abstract artistic groups--and their exhibitions of abstract art in particular--served as crucial loci for the articulation of societal identities in a newly democratic nation at the onset of the Cold War"-- |

The book ultimately demonstrates that postwar Brazilian art institutions and abstract artistic groups--and their exhibitions of abstract art in particular--served as crucial loci for the articulation of societal identities in a newly democratic nation at the onset of the Cold War"-- Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (DE-588)2129533-5 gnd rswk-swf Museu de Arte Moderna São Paulo (DE-588)5157386-6 gnd rswk-swf Bienal de São Paulo 2. 1953-1954 São Paulo (DE-588)1241137-1 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1945-1960 gnd rswk-swf Abstrakte Kunst (DE-588)4141146-8 gnd rswk-swf Ästhetik (DE-588)4000626-8 gnd rswk-swf Politische Kunst (DE-588)4175029-9 gnd rswk-swf Nachkriegszeit (DE-588)4421423-6 gnd rswk-swf São Paulo (DE-588)4051667-2 gnd rswk-swf Rio de Janeiro (DE-588)4076741-3 gnd rswk-swf Bienal Internacional de São Paulo Art, Abstract / Political aspects / Brazil / 20th century Rio de Janeiro (DE-588)4076741-3 g São Paulo (DE-588)4051667-2 g Abstrakte Kunst (DE-588)4141146-8 s Ästhetik (DE-588)4000626-8 s Politische Kunst (DE-588)4175029-9 s Nachkriegszeit (DE-588)4421423-6 s Geschichte 1945-1960 z DE-604 Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (DE-588)2129533-5 b Museu de Arte Moderna São Paulo (DE-588)5157386-6 b Bienal de São Paulo 2. 1953-1954 São Paulo (DE-588)1241137-1 f Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe, ebk 978-0-520-38520-7 Studies on Latin American art 5 (DE-604)BV046156722 5 http://www.sehepunkte.de/2022/10/37096.html rezensiert in: sehepunkte 22 (2022), Nr. 10 Rezension |
