in OREST hiillyin I his is the first comprehensive story in Ukraine and abroad about the origins of the assertion and development of organized life, representatives of various waves and curents of Ukrainian emi gration in the UK. The defining feature of the book is that all the facts and phe nomena referred to here are not borrowed from previously pub lished texts, but obtained and found by the author exclusive ly — during two scientific trips to the UK and a special study and selection of empirical material in archives and libraries, collec tions of the main centers of Ukrainians in London: the Union of Ukrainians in Great Britain, the Ukrainian Publishing Union, the Union of Ukrainian Youth, the Union of Former Soldiers - Ukrain ians in Great Britain, the boards of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic and Ukrainian Orthodox Churches. The collection of Ukraini an studies was also worked out in the main book collection of the country — the British Library. The book consists of an introductionT and six chapters. Each chapter combines several separate topics. The first chapter clarifies the phenomenon of Ukrainian emi gration to Western Europe. These are three waves of mass emigra tion of Ukrainians abroad and the British specifics of migration policy.
588 Ukrainians in Great Britain The first official center of Ukrainians in London — the Ukrain ian diplomatic mission of the Ukrainian People’s Republic — is described in detail. It operated in the period 1919-1921. It was a small group of highly educated and patriotic Ukrainian diplomats. They created a positive image of the young Ukrainian state in the Western world, fought for the recognition of the Ukrainian Peo ple’s Republic by the international community. Not less important was the activity of the Ukrainian Press Bu reau (1931-1939). The first publication of a number of hitherto unknown facts about it became possible thanks to the discovery by the author of the archive of the Bureau, which has been stored in a friendly archival institution of Polish emigration — the Gen eral Sikorski Polish Institute in London — since the Second World War. The characteristics of the founder Yakov Makogon, the head of the bureau Volodymyr Kysilevsky and full-time employees are given. The following chapter presents information first obtained from archival sources about the initial stage of Ukrainian printing on the British territory: the first books, newspapers, magazines, alma nacs, calendars. It tells about the activities of Ukrainian printing houses, publishing houses, bookstores and iconic figures in this case. The history of the establishment, approval and develop ment on the British Isles of Ukrainian public organizations such as the Union of Ukrainians in Great Britain, the Ukrainian Pub lishing Union, the Organization of Former Ukrainian Soldiers, the Ukrainian Youth
Union, the Union of Ukrainian Journalists Abroad is described. An overview of the activities of religious and spiritual organ izations of Ukrainians abroad is given in retrospect. They are the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the Ukrainian Autoceph alous Orthodox Church. In this context, there are stories about three complete translations of the Ukrainian Bible, which came to Ukraine in printed form from three European capitals: the translation of Panteleimon Kulish from Vienna, Ivan Khomenko from Rome and Ivan Ohiienko from London. Ukrainians in Great Britain 589 translation, is described in detail: the relationship of the transla tor Ivan Ohiienko with the British and Foreign Bible Society, the threat of destruction of manuscripts during the war and the print ing of the Ukrainian Bible in the London printing house «Wilm Kloves and Sons». The resonant actions of British Ukrainians based on the anal ysis of the files of the main Ukrainian newspapers and magazines in Great Britain («Ukrainian Thought», «Liberation Way», «Voice of Youth», «Vanguard») are described. It is about the protection of compatriots — sick invalids of World War II, the demand for Ukrainian programs of world radio stations «Voice of America» and «ВВС», the fight with the Russian falsifiers of Ukrainian his tory, the requirement to recognize Russia’s artificially organized Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of Ukrainian people by the world community, the search for friends of Ukraine among prom inent statesmen, politicians and cultural figures of the Western world. A separate section analyzes English-language book publishing. It was carried out by Ukrainians themselves in order to acquaint the world community with the centuries-old history of the struggle of Ukrainians for their independent state, as well as by foreigners — not hidden sympathizers of Ukrainians. One of such organiza tions, the Scottish League for European Freedom, and the series of pro-Ukrainian pamphlets and books it produced are discussed in more detail. The section «Subversive Literature from London» deals with the preconditions for establishing admission
to the British capital and sending a series of anti-Soviet publications to the territory of sub-Soviet Ukraine. The goals and objectives of the campaign are revealed, the network of sending books via the London-Ukraine channel is being clarified. Forms of «subversive editions» are de scribed: deception books, pocket brochures, miniature editions. Figures on the scale of shipments are given. The issue of material resources of publications and the number of participants who were involved in this action from among foreign tourists is touched upon.
590 Ukrainians in Great Britain A number of plots are diluted by the memories of those still alive, direct participants of the various lives of Ukrainians abroad, whom the author managed to find and to record such valuable evi dence for history. From the book, they already appear to be irrefu table documents of the passing day. Such pages and sections found by the author, passed through his heart, dressed in an interesting documentary-journalistic cover cannot but fascinate the reader. The breadth, depth, authenticity and conciseness of the pre sented material, the plot development of events and the documen tary-journalistic style of the story peculiar to this author give the opportunity to use this book as a kind of guide to the history of Ukrainians in Great Britain.

in OREST hiillyin I his is the first comprehensive story in Ukraine and abroad about the origins of the assertion and development of organized life, representatives of various waves and curents of Ukrainian emi gration in the UK. The defining feature of the book is that all the facts and phe nomena referred to here are not borrowed from previously pub lished texts, but obtained and found by the author exclusive ly — during two scientific trips to the UK and a special study and selection of empirical material in archives and libraries, collec tions of the main centers of Ukrainians in London: the Union of Ukrainians in Great Britain, the Ukrainian Publishing Union, the Union of Ukrainian Youth, the Union of Former Soldiers - Ukrain ians in Great Britain, the boards of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic and Ukrainian Orthodox Churches. The collection of Ukraini an studies was also worked out in the main book collection of the country — the British Library. The book consists of an introductionT and six chapters. Each chapter combines several separate topics. The first chapter clarifies the phenomenon of Ukrainian emi gration to Western Europe. These are three waves of mass emigra tion of Ukrainians abroad and the British specifics of migration policy.
588 Ukrainians in Great Britain The first official center of Ukrainians in London — the Ukrain ian diplomatic mission of the Ukrainian People’s Republic — is described in detail. It operated in the period 1919-1921. It was a small group of highly educated and patriotic Ukrainian diplomats. They created a positive image of the young Ukrainian state in the Western world, fought for the recognition of the Ukrainian Peo ple’s Republic by the international community. Not less important was the activity of the Ukrainian Press Bu reau (1931-1939). The first publication of a number of hitherto unknown facts about it became possible thanks to the discovery by the author of the archive of the Bureau, which has been stored in a friendly archival institution of Polish emigration — the Gen eral Sikorski Polish Institute in London — since the Second World War. The characteristics of the founder Yakov Makogon, the head of the bureau Volodymyr Kysilevsky and full-time employees are given. The following chapter presents information first obtained from archival sources about the initial stage of Ukrainian printing on the British territory: the first books, newspapers, magazines, alma nacs, calendars. It tells about the activities of Ukrainian printing houses, publishing houses, bookstores and iconic figures in this case. The history of the establishment, approval and develop ment on the British Isles of Ukrainian public organizations such as the Union of Ukrainians in Great Britain, the Ukrainian Pub lishing Union, the Organization of Former Ukrainian Soldiers, the Ukrainian Youth
Union, the Union of Ukrainian Journalists Abroad is described. An overview of the activities of religious and spiritual organ izations of Ukrainians abroad is given in retrospect. They are the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the Ukrainian Autoceph alous Orthodox Church. In this context, there are stories about three complete translations of the Ukrainian Bible, which came to Ukraine in printed form from three European capitals: the translation of Panteleimon Kulish from Vienna, Ivan Khomenko from Rome and Ivan Ohiienko from London. Ukrainians in Great Britain 589 translation, is described in detail: the relationship of the transla tor Ivan Ohiienko with the British and Foreign Bible Society, the threat of destruction of manuscripts during the war and the print ing of the Ukrainian Bible in the London printing house «Wilm Kloves and Sons». The resonant actions of British Ukrainians based on the anal ysis of the files of the main Ukrainian newspapers and magazines in Great Britain («Ukrainian Thought», «Liberation Way», «Voice of Youth», «Vanguard») are described. It is about the protection of compatriots — sick invalids of World War II, the demand for Ukrainian programs of world radio stations «Voice of America» and «ВВС», the fight with the Russian falsifiers of Ukrainian his tory, the requirement to recognize Russia’s artificially organized Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of Ukrainian people by the world community, the search for friends of Ukraine among prom inent statesmen, politicians and cultural figures of the Western world. A separate section analyzes English-language book publishing. It was carried out by Ukrainians themselves in order to acquaint the world community with the centuries-old history of the struggle of Ukrainians for their independent state, as well as by foreigners — not hidden sympathizers of Ukrainians. One of such organiza tions, the Scottish League for European Freedom, and the series of pro-Ukrainian pamphlets and books it produced are discussed in more detail. The section «Subversive Literature from London» deals with the preconditions for establishing admission
to the British capital and sending a series of anti-Soviet publications to the territory of sub-Soviet Ukraine. The goals and objectives of the campaign are revealed, the network of sending books via the London-Ukraine channel is being clarified. Forms of «subversive editions» are de scribed: deception books, pocket brochures, miniature editions. Figures on the scale of shipments are given. The issue of material resources of publications and the number of participants who were involved in this action from among foreign tourists is touched upon.
590 Ukrainians in Great Britain A number of plots are diluted by the memories of those still alive, direct participants of the various lives of Ukrainians abroad, whom the author managed to find and to record such valuable evi dence for history. From the book, they already appear to be irrefu table documents of the passing day. Such pages and sections found by the author, passed through his heart, dressed in an interesting documentary-journalistic cover cannot but fascinate the reader. The breadth, depth, authenticity and conciseness of the pre sented material, the plot development of events and the documen tary-journalistic style of the story peculiar to this author give the opportunity to use this book as a kind of guide to the history of Ukrainians in Great Britain. |
