What does it mean to be female? ? the weaker sex? Think again. Our of the animal kingdom has been waiK^„ centuries of sexist thinking. Female animals have always been marginalized and misunderstood by the scientific patriarchy. Charles Darwin himself cast the female animal in the shape of a Victorian housewife: passive, coy, monogamous and submissive by default. Males became the main event - the dominant drivers of evolutionary change. We now know this is all wrong. In the last few decades, a revolution has been brewing in zoology and evolutionary biology. Lucy Cooke introduces us to a riotous cast of animals, and the scientists studying them, who are redefining not just the female of the species, but the very forces that shape evolution. In the mountains of California, Cooke discovers how the female sage grouse exploded the myth of the passive female. On the island of Madagascar, she learns how the female lemur, our ancient primate cousin, dominates males physically and politically. Cruising the Washington coast, she finds kinship with a killer whale ֊ one of the few species whose females go through menopause, and are the wise old leaders of their hunting community. On Hawaii, she meets courting female albatross couples hooking up to raise their chicks. In the Kalahari Desert, she discovers why meerkat mothers are the most murderous mammals on the planet. And back home, she finds a common female mole powered by her bulging male gonads. The bitches in Bitch overturn outdated binary expectations of bodies, brains, biology and behaviour.
