ABSTRACTS „Real democracy”. Economic crisis and populism in Spain in the first years of ruling of Felipe VI (MARIA BALEA) The article analyzes the surge to power of the Spanish party Podemos ("We can”) in 2015 and its discourse on democracy at the time. During the campaign, Podemos promised to fight against the Casta (elite) who dominated the economic and political landscape, in order to secure a "real democracy” for the Spanish people. The main hypothesis of this article is that the promise of replacing the corrupt regime with a "real democracy" does not represent a solution to the political crisis, and can even contribute to the preservation of the structural weaknesses that generated it in the first place. The first sections depict the political context of its ascension, the formation of the party, and its promises during the campaign. The focus then turns to the party’s discourse on democracy. Thus, the article argues that independent and strong institutions ensuring an effective system of checks and balances could be part of the solution for the political crisis in Spain (and elsewhere), while the promise of a "real democracy” can potentially worsen it. By opposing an abstract model of "real democracy” to the current - supposedly fake - one does not tackle the problems with which Spain was confronted. Keywords: Podemos, populism, democracy, discourse, Pablo Iglesias A forgotten spring in the history of dismantling a nation: The Croatian Spring (ANDREEA ȘTEFAN) The hypothesis behind this research is that the Yugoslav crisis of the 1990s had also been announced by The
Croatian Spring, a conflict reconciled superficially by Tito and the Yugoslav federal authorities, the consequences of which were to be seen with the passing of time. With the declared intention of an attempt to recover the historical memory through the neighbour’s lens, from a methodological point of view this article uses the deductive method as foundation of the research, and looks into the logical progress of events, from general to particular ones, in order to facilitate the understanding of the complexity of certain phenomena. The purpose of this approach is to render a picture as equidistant and realistic as possible to what The Croatian Spring meant for the region, so as to demonstrate that the nationalisms resulting within this phenomenon determined in time the dissolution of the Yugoslav federal state. Keywords: Yugoslavia, Tito, The Croatian Spring, ethnic nationalism, self-determination
464 ABSTRACTS Women under the Islamic law: traditions and legislation of the Muslim States (ALINA MARIN) The article resorts to theoretical literature, doctrinal Qu’ranic texts, hadiths, other sources of conduct and beliefs peculiar to the Muslims, as well as to statistics of various international organizations, in order to draw the main guidelines of action of the Islamic world towards women. Through information pertaining to the axiology of islam and the legislation of certain Muslim states, I will attempt to define the theoretical statute and the actual status of women in the contemporary Islamic world, subject to certain variations of laws and attempts to improve their condition. Keywords: Islamic law, women's rights, Qu'ran, gender inequality, violence Child labour and the industrialization of England: legal matters and of the history of mentalities (IOANA SAVIN) The article renders the main circumstances that took to the employment of children in the English economy at the end of the 18th through mid-19th century against the backdrop of industrialization, and also intends to analyze the most discussed - and condemned - activities entrusted to minors in the textile industry and mining, respectively. The article also analyzes the first steps taken in the socio-cultural and legislative field that would gradually evolve to the interdiction of child labour in England. Keywords: industrialization, exploitative child labour, exploitation, working class, England A siege to the 19th-century feminists: the academies of fine arts (ANA JEGA) The article first summarizes the
position of 19th-century women of artistic talent and high aspirations in their attempt to be admitted in the academies of fine arts of France. I will search the causes having taken to their exclusion from the European academies, and their confinement to minor art at best. I will then advance by showing the slow changes that took, toward the end of the 19th century, to a certain degree of open-mindedness of the decision-makers, and eventually culminated in the much delayed acceptance of women in reputed academies of fine arts. In the end, the parallel of information on Paris and Bucharest will make an institutional comparison from a period when Romania showed much admiration and imitation toward France. Keywords: academies of fine arts, artistic education, women artists, feminism, patriarchy Memory making and memory keeping: narratives of the past in the Bucharest Municipality Museum and Basilica di Santa Croce of Florence (ROXANA COMAN) A museum and a church fulfill various roles - from those of institutions and architectural works to places associated with different meanings and symbols. Since churches and other places of worship began to also take on the role of
ABSTRACTS 465 museums in the modern age, and to monetize on the interest of tourists not only in the edifices, but also in the works of art that they shelter, this article aims to analyze how a church and a museum can participate in the construction of collective and individual memory. The specific examples of Basilica di Santa Croce of Florence and the Bucharest Municipality Museum have been chosen as case studies within the summer school organized by the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz (Max-PlanckInstitut), and they build upon my work as a museologist in the Bucharest Municipality Museum. Keywords: museums, memory, cultural history, the process of memory, institution, archive Voyage to the East. Western eyes seeing the Romanian Principalities in the 18th century (ALEXANDRA NAE) The article outlines the Western enlightened perception of the South-Eastern European space of the premodern Romanian Principalities, and particularly analyzes how the travellers coming for the first time from Western Europe to unknown places in these principalities reacted to them during the 18th century. It is necessary to examine the travellers' profile, the scope of the travel, and how the Enlightenment ideology met the Western adversity of these travellers toward the Ottoman power, in decline by the time. In the Phanariote Romanian century, an emerging Romantic idealism made that the image of the barbaric state revealed to the Western traveller in this periphery of Europe should be, to a certain extent and unexpectedley, even valued. A synthesis of the foreign gaze upon this Romanian
century reveals in the latter the mixture of barbary and hope for civilization that characterizes the end of the Phanariote ruling in the Romanian feudal states. Keywords: Romanian Principalities, the Phanariots, 18th century, Entightenment, barbary, the Ottoman Empire, Imperial Russia, voyage Not knowing how to prove to the world. Maternity and child abandonment in the early to mid-19th Romanian century (MARINA ÎNGUSTU) Challenged by the efforts of modernisation in the first half of the 19th century, the Romanian society tried to preserve its traditional mechanisms, cultural attitudes and customs. The manichaeism and intransigence in perceiving the world also affected the mothers, whose practices could place them either in the world of honour or in that of the sin. Depicted by the masculine voices of the era as a damnatory maternal practice, the recourse to the abandonment of infants was perceived as the absence of maternal love. Therefore, the article attempts to reevaluate this claim based on facts and as objective as possible, by analysing the only direct historical sources that could indicate the reasons behind the practice of abandonment: the mothers’ notes that accompanied the abandoned newborns, now in the archives of the former Institute of the poor children of Bucharest. Correlated with the socioeconomic realities, with the cultural, legislative and institutional norms of motherhood, with the perspectives of the State and the Church,
466 ABSTRACTS the conclusions of this research could be relevant also in order to better understand how the Romanian society perceived the efforts of modernization at the beginning of the 19th century. Key words: maternity, abandonment, foundlings, maternal practices, modernisation Painted with the words: the Romanian peasant in the age of Romanticism through the eyes of foreign travellers (CRISTINA CIOBÄNOIU) The article looks for the body image of the traditional Romanian peasant in the 19th century through the words of Western travellers coming in the Romanian countries with various missions or curiosities. The stature, physiognomy, nutrition, hygiene or pathologies of the Romanian peasants combine objective information with human subjectivities in which we read the observer's aesthetic taste and his or her benevolence (or not) towards the state of facts discovered in these South-Eastern parts of Europe. Certain sterotyping like that of physical types (Roman, Dacian, Oriental) can be found quite frequently in the Romantic age. The paper intends to probe into a past of experiences and discourses that not only looks for identity matters, but also for the picturesque recoveries resulted from the encounters between races, people and civilizations. Keywords: Romanian peasantry, physiognomy, women’s beauty, folk costume, identity, Romanticism Homeric epic and the archaeology: an historical and material analysis (MALINA MAGDAN). The paper resorts to the scientific articles and information that we have today in order to ponder over the historical veridicity or at least
plausibility of certain facts described in the two epic poems The Iliad and The Odyssey by Homer. Such approach does not imply any challenge to the fictional character of the poems, but intends to discuss only a careful selection of certain elements of political history, archaeology and history of mentalities that can sustain positivistic or quasi-positivistic hypotheses underlying the poetic stands of Homer. Keywords: archaeology, Homer, The Iliad, Trojan War, Bronze Age Myth and history. The foundation of Rome in legends and material vestiges (ALEXANDRA MORARU) The paper proposes a parallel between the legends of the foundation of Rome, with special focus on the legendary figure of Romulus, and important vestiges of uncertain date that still testify, in several tourist attractions of Rome, for the power of these legends. In the synthesis of the myths that shaped the profile of the founder of the Roman capital city, a series of cultural influences meet in the forceful configuration of a new mythological product, whose value is enhanced by valuable material vestiges consecrated to it. Keywords: legends, Roman mythology, foundation of Rome, Romulus, archaeology
ABSTRACTS 467 Anagnorisis or the discovery of identity between brothers. Orestes and Electra in the plays of Aeschylus and Sophocles (MARIA MARINESCU) In the ancient Greek tragedies of the Classical period, the process of identification and recognition between brothers and sisters have certain social, psychological and even political implications. With reference to the reunion of Oreste with his sister Electra after the murder of their father, king Agamemnon, by their mother, I shall analyze the symbols that contribute to the desciphering of their identity, especially the brother’s identity by his sister, and their social and philosophical implications as well, in the tragedies of Aeschylus and Sophocles. By analyzing how Electra became a representative character in the tragedies of the 5th century BCE, the article will also look into the role of men and women in the classical Greek oikos, particularly in relation to the religious field and to the (non)fulfillment of funerary rites. Keywords: Greek tragedy, Classical Greece, recognition (anagnorisis), brothers and sisters, symbols, matricide Frederick II of Hohenstaufen as a patron of letters (MARIUS GHIȚĂ) The article pursues the literary and educational patronage within the larger range of cultural activities of the 13th-century emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, a spectacular royal figure of the late Middle Ages, now challenged in the historiography between those who support him as a forerunner of the Renaissance and those who see in him a behaviour of medieval autocracy, respectively. The emperor's relations to the
emerging Italian poetry, his ordering of cultural translations soon to become essential in Europe, the establishment of the first secular university in Italy, and how his patronage interfered with politics, culture, secularism, especially through more or less known figures of the Italian or largely European culture (see Pier della Vigna or Thomas Aquinas), will be of particular attention in this paper. Keywords: literary patronage, the Sicilian School, poetry, translations, University of Naples, Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, Pier della Vigna, Thomas Aquinas Ways of salvation in Dante’s Paradise (ADELA PĂULEȚ) The article is interested in how the idea of paradisal beatitude is expressed in Dante’s Divine Comedy, and how the salvation is materialized into explicit figures and biographies of the beati in the last part of Dante's travel in the afterworld. The poet uses theological ideas that are predictable and coherent against the backdrop of his own formation, time and Catholic beliefs, and yet he chooses to poetically „absolve” of sins a complex cohort of characters among whom there are not only saints or Church fathers, but also pagan heroes, biblical characters of the Old Testament, or even his own ancestors or friends. I will pursue plausible theological explanations in order to account for Dante's selections in a given context. Keywords: paradise, salvation, theology, philosophy, the Catolic Church
468 ABSTRACTS Transgressive femininity and the pleasures of life in Boccaccio’s Decameron (ANDREEA IGNAT) The paper pursues a reading of Boccaccio’s Decameron from the viewpoint of a transgressive type of femininity, which was even considered by a contemporary author a form of alterity asserted in the late Middle Ages in opposition to the standard position of the man. Boccaccio’s irony, benevolence and funny pranks defining this kind of femininity have often been read as a superior understanding of the human needs in general, one which the proto-Renaissance writer showed towards all people at the debut of the humanist ideology. Yet, Boccaccio's own ideology should be considered within the brackets of its own limits, which would indicate his clear unfavouring of women in the patriarchal order, and especially through marriage. Keywords: storytelling, plague, pleasure, limitation, authority, obedience, patriarchy Narcis and the 'Bible' of the decadents. Filiation and echoes between the novels À rebours by J.-K. Huysmans and The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde (ANDREEA ASTRATINEI) A connection between À rebours, the novel by Joris-Karl Huysmans, and Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, is not new. Representative for the late 19th-century literary decadentism in Europe, these novels build the portraits of famous dandies, more passionate of art than of life or humans, rejecting the banality of everyday gestures and living for an ideal halo of elegance and beauty. The detail that drew the attention of critics like Graham Hough (and not only) was the subtle
intertextuality of Wilde's book, where Dorian Gray takes as model a young French, the hero in a novel without action, which seems to him a character anticipating his ego. Given the absence of any title, certain literary critics found similarities between the description of the "yellow book" and Huysmans’ earlier writing, a parallel that makes the starting point in this article. By echoing des Esseintes in Dorian Gray, I will proceed to an analysis of their similarities and differences in order to test the plausibility of this hypothesis, as reflected in Wilde’s original declarations and the novels as well. Keywords: decadentism, influence, Oscar Wilde, Joris-Karl Huysmans, Dorian Gray, Jean des Esseintes, dandyism |
