Zusammenfassung:Caves are an archive of the past. On the one hand, the ancient geological past - the dramatic rupturings and slidings of vast landmasses before ever there were humans to witness events. On the hand, our recent anthropological history – the story of human habitation in Oman. Caves were used as shelter from wars, from predators and from harsh weather conditions and as sources of fresh water and valuable minerals. Petroglyphs and ancient scripts recount the narratives of past generations, yielding rich insights into the way of life. And indeed, until very recent times, many of Oman’s caves were inhabited - the stone houses built by previous generations still stand today. This book is at once a scholarly study of Oman’s geology as revealed through meticulous examination of its caves, and at the same time a handbook for amateur explorers interested in discovering this subterranean world for themselves. Documented here are more than 100 caves, including much material only very recently discovered and as yet unreported.
