SUMMARY The present study aims at giving a historical representation on syllogistics’ formal system. What the author intends to do is to reveal the aporetics specific to the first system of logic, that is to say, of those particular problems that have given it prominence within the space of the science of logic and of knowledge. The material is structured on three chapters, corresponding to the three significant ways of approaching syllogistics: the classical way, referring to formal research based on the methods of traditional logic; the modern way, i.e. the attempts tö rewrite syllogistics by means of symbolic logic; the historical, philosophical, metalogical way, discussing problems such as: the origin and development of syllogistics, its relations with other domains of logic as well as with other subjects of knowledge, etc. Are presented and discussed Romanian contributions related to each way of researching the problems of syllogistics. Should it be unlimited in the space of the science of logic or knowledge, syllogistics would not have an epistemological identity. The identity of syllogistics was conceived - and this is main purpose of the present discourse - in two ways: by specifying a certain aporetic domain and by differentiating it from all the other domains. The “open” problems are set in connection with two reference systems - the normal syllogistic system and the extended syllogistics. The latter implies three concepts - “the syllogistics whit negative terms”, “the poly-syllogism” and “the axiomatic system”, which the author presents in the introduction. The
formal type of research comes first in a logical construction, but one has to make a distinction between the classical formal research (based on the methods of traditional logic) and the modern one (based on the methods of symbolic logic) of syllogistics. The first chapter offers data on classical formal research and some results obtained by the Romanian researchers in this domain; the most prominent is Florea Țuțugan’s syllogistics with negative terms which 152
constitutes one of the few reconstructions of syllogistics by means of classical methods, in an era of mathematics and symbolic calculus. The system built up by the Romanian logician represents, under many aspects, an extension of syllogistics; yet the scope of the normal syllogistical system cannot be exceeded neither in its content, nor in the techniques and methods of research. The last part of the first chapter describes ways of approaching the problem of singular terms; that is a problem of hermeneutics connected to the Aristotle’s text, a frequent presence in the Romanian logic. The advent of mathematical logic has changed the status of the science of logic and, naturally, of that of syllogistics. Furthermore, the confidence in the power of expression of symbols methods used by the “new logic” has exceeded many times the concern for the preservation of the noetic shades of classical logic. The meanings of some rewritings of syllogistics using symbolic means is debated upon in the second chapter. Some of the results pertaining to Romanian logicians are presented as well. They concern: a) the two methods of organizing the deductive systems improved by the symbolic logic in its evolution: the axiomatic method and the natural deduction; b) the “chapters” or calculations included in symbolic logic: the calculus of propositions, predicates, classes and relations. From the point of view of these two methods, there have been attempts to rewrite syllogistics in order to obtain more satisfactory results. The history of these attempts shows that there are no absolute, final
results; each and every result allows corrections, for the classical logic’s contents is not compatible enough with the methods and means of symbolic logic. Comparing the basic systems with their rewritings (applications and methods) a significant loss in the matter of semantics is observed. Yet, syllogistics submitted to such rewritings shows its limitations, thus its specific aporetics being reactivated as well. Any chapter of a discipline grows by referring to another; the disciplines themselves mature in an interdisciplinary environment. Mathematical logic, on the other hand, is able to re-establish its origin, connected to syllogistics; 153
offering means to rephrase syliogistics, it revises its fundaments. In this chapter (the second), three results obtained in the attempts to rewrite syliogistics by means of symbolic logic are debated - a relational model (Grigore Moisil), a moulding of syliogistics using means of the logic of predicates (Sorin Vieru) and an idea related to rendering syliogistics by the method of natural deduction (Gheorghe Enescu). Through the historical-philosophical research of the problems of syliogistics, its significance as a moment in the evolution of logic, its historical character, its relations to other scientific disciplines, the nature of its presumptions and the value of the syllogistic arguments, its cognitive and instrumental undertakings are brought forward. The enumerated aspects are subordinated to the domain of syliogistics as far as they arise there from and lead, through their solutions, to establishing its place and role within cognition. In Romanian logic there is a tradition connected to the “metalogic” definition of syllogistic problems marked, in its beginnings, by the considerations of Titu Maiorescu in his Logic, and continued by other logicians and philosophers, in almost all the studies on logic. Some of these results are presented in the third chapter. One of them is the research undertaken by Athanase Joja on the origins of syliogistics, on its place and role within logic; another is a point of view of Alexandru Surdu on the relations between the classical and mathematical logic. In the end of the chapter, a study is used regarding the links between classical
and mathematical logic and mathematics. Personal points of view are suggested relating to the three ways of approaching syliogistics. The contributions of this study to the domain of syllogistic aporetics are the following: building a relational system of syliogistics, by extending Moisil’s relational system, in which all the syllogistic moods in Țuțugan s system (moods based on propositions which contain not only positive but also negative terms) are being set out; defining the relation between classical, symbolic and mathematical logic, starting from the idea of their common origin; a 154
bibliographie research completed with a Bibliography that comprises all the studies of logic published during the 20th century by Romanian authors. The study can be included, in the author’s opinion, in the tradition of logic research, especially of the syllogistics one, owed to Romanian logicians, philosophers, and mathematicians. It revalues this tradition while trying to continue it.

SUMMARY The present study aims at giving a historical representation on syllogistics’ formal system. What the author intends to do is to reveal the aporetics specific to the first system of logic, that is to say, of those particular problems that have given it prominence within the space of the science of logic and of knowledge. The material is structured on three chapters, corresponding to the three significant ways of approaching syllogistics: the classical way, referring to formal research based on the methods of traditional logic; the modern way, i.e. the attempts tö rewrite syllogistics by means of symbolic logic; the historical, philosophical, metalogical way, discussing problems such as: the origin and development of syllogistics, its relations with other domains of logic as well as with other subjects of knowledge, etc. Are presented and discussed Romanian contributions related to each way of researching the problems of syllogistics. Should it be unlimited in the space of the science of logic or knowledge, syllogistics would not have an epistemological identity. The identity of syllogistics was conceived - and this is main purpose of the present discourse - in two ways: by specifying a certain aporetic domain and by differentiating it from all the other domains. The “open” problems are set in connection with two reference systems - the normal syllogistic system and the extended syllogistics. The latter implies three concepts - “the syllogistics whit negative terms”, “the poly-syllogism” and “the axiomatic system”, which the author presents in the introduction. The
formal type of research comes first in a logical construction, but one has to make a distinction between the classical formal research (based on the methods of traditional logic) and the modern one (based on the methods of symbolic logic) of syllogistics. The first chapter offers data on classical formal research and some results obtained by the Romanian researchers in this domain; the most prominent is Florea Țuțugan’s syllogistics with negative terms which 152
constitutes one of the few reconstructions of syllogistics by means of classical methods, in an era of mathematics and symbolic calculus. The system built up by the Romanian logician represents, under many aspects, an extension of syllogistics; yet the scope of the normal syllogistical system cannot be exceeded neither in its content, nor in the techniques and methods of research. The last part of the first chapter describes ways of approaching the problem of singular terms; that is a problem of hermeneutics connected to the Aristotle’s text, a frequent presence in the Romanian logic. The advent of mathematical logic has changed the status of the science of logic and, naturally, of that of syllogistics. Furthermore, the confidence in the power of expression of symbols methods used by the “new logic” has exceeded many times the concern for the preservation of the noetic shades of classical logic. The meanings of some rewritings of syllogistics using symbolic means is debated upon in the second chapter. Some of the results pertaining to Romanian logicians are presented as well. They concern: a) the two methods of organizing the deductive systems improved by the symbolic logic in its evolution: the axiomatic method and the natural deduction; b) the “chapters” or calculations included in symbolic logic: the calculus of propositions, predicates, classes and relations. From the point of view of these two methods, there have been attempts to rewrite syllogistics in order to obtain more satisfactory results. The history of these attempts shows that there are no absolute, final
results; each and every result allows corrections, for the classical logic’s contents is not compatible enough with the methods and means of symbolic logic. Comparing the basic systems with their rewritings (applications and methods) a significant loss in the matter of semantics is observed. Yet, syllogistics submitted to such rewritings shows its limitations, thus its specific aporetics being reactivated as well. Any chapter of a discipline grows by referring to another; the disciplines themselves mature in an interdisciplinary environment. Mathematical logic, on the other hand, is able to re-establish its origin, connected to syllogistics; 153
offering means to rephrase syliogistics, it revises its fundaments. In this chapter (the second), three results obtained in the attempts to rewrite syliogistics by means of symbolic logic are debated - a relational model (Grigore Moisil), a moulding of syliogistics using means of the logic of predicates (Sorin Vieru) and an idea related to rendering syliogistics by the method of natural deduction (Gheorghe Enescu). Through the historical-philosophical research of the problems of syliogistics, its significance as a moment in the evolution of logic, its historical character, its relations to other scientific disciplines, the nature of its presumptions and the value of the syllogistic arguments, its cognitive and instrumental undertakings are brought forward. The enumerated aspects are subordinated to the domain of syliogistics as far as they arise there from and lead, through their solutions, to establishing its place and role within cognition.
