Zusammenfassung: | "Walking Mannequins explores clothing retail workers' experiences in stores oriented toward teens and twenty-somethings using interviews. We aim to understand how employers regulate beauty- and brand-oriented 'aesthetic labor,' how workers must look and act to evoke the brand they represent. We find that workers deal with ever-changing schedules and constant surveillance. Racial hierarchies are visible both in the body rules that workers must follow and their relationships with managers, coworkers, and customers. By focusing on the intersection of race, gender, and new surveillance technologies, Walking Mannequins contributes to existing research on inequality and labor in the twenty-first century"-- |

In malls across the United States, clothing retail workers navigate low wages and un predictable schedules. Despite these problems, they devote time and money to mirror the sleek mannequins stylishly adorned with the latest merchandise. Bringing workers voices to the fore, sociologists Joya Misra and Kyla Walters demonstrate how employers reproduce gendered and racist beauty standards by regulating workers size and look. Interactions with customers, coworkers, and managers further reinforce racial hierarchies. New surveillance technologies also lead to ineffective corporate decision-making based on flawed data. By focusing on the interaction of race, gender, and surveillance, Walking Mannequins exposes the dynamics of retail work in the twenty-first century.

In malls across the United States, clothing retail workers navigate low wages and un predictable schedules. Despite these problems, they devote time and money to mirror the sleek mannequins stylishly adorned with the latest merchandise. Bringing workers' voices to the fore, sociologists Joya Misra and Kyla Walters demonstrate how employers reproduce gendered and racist "beauty" standards by regulating workers' size and look. |

By focusing on the intersection of race, gender, and new surveillance technologies, Walking Mannequins contributes to existing research on inequality and labor in the twenty-first century"-- Arbeitsbedingungen (DE-588)4002641-3 gnd rswk-swf Verkäufer (DE-588)4126928-7 gnd rswk-swf Schönheitsideal (DE-588)4128410-0 gnd rswk-swf Verkäuferin (DE-588)4127365-5 gnd rswk-swf Überwachung (DE-588)4134175-2 gnd rswk-swf Geschlecht (DE-588)4020547-2 gnd rswk-swf Aussehen (DE-588)4233878-5 gnd rswk-swf Rasse (DE-588)4048440-3 gnd rswk-swf Bekleidungseinzelhandel (DE-588)4126087-9 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf Retail trade / United States / Employees Retail trade / Social aspects / United States Equality Commerce de détail / États-Unis / Personnel Commerce de détail / Aspect social / États-Unis Retail trade / Employees Retail trade / Social aspects United States USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Bekleidungseinzelhandel (DE-588)4126087-9 s Verkäufer (DE-588)4126928-7 s Verkäuferin (DE-588)4127365-5 s Aussehen (DE-588)4233878-5 s Rasse (DE-588)4048440-3 s Geschlecht (DE-588)4020547-2 s Schönheitsideal (DE-588)4128410-0 s Arbeitsbedingungen (DE-588)4002641-3 s Überwachung (DE-588)4134175-2 s DE-604 Walters, Kyla 1987- Sonstige (DE-588)1252888023 oth Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe Misra, Joya Walking mannequins Oakland, California : University of California Press, [2022] 978-0-520-38466-8 Digitalisierung UB Augsburg - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=033325125&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis Digitalisierung UB Augsburg - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=033325125&sequence=000003&line_number=0002&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Klappentext |
