1 his collection of՜ original essays on Ihomas Middleton and William Rowley’s unsettling revenge tragedy The Changeling showcases new directions in criticism and research. Chapters explore its Jacobean repertory context, the relationship of actor and audience, the implications of the ‘spatial turn’ and new perspectives from disability studies and the history of the emotions. It concludes with a section that addresses the single biggest challenge, for contemporary criticism and performance: its complex and unsettling representation of rape. With contributors drawn from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France and Switzerland, the collection equips readers to engage with a variety of critical approaches to the play.
