Summary In the context of Czech historical scholarship the systematic study of the postwar exile and its (sub)culture still remains a largely un explored segment of historiography. Though the sweeping political change in 1989 made it possible for Czech (and Slovak) historians to launch a large-scale research of exile communities worldwide, more than three decades later this task is still far from being fully accomplished. As a result, our knowledge of Czech exile subcul tures in many geographical areas is still either fragmentary or non existent. Above all, this applies to the culturally rather heterogene ous Czech exile in remote Australia which has been formed by three huge emigration waves in 1948,1968 and 1970/1980Տ. The Czech(oslovak) exile left behind a truly impressive leg acy being an important part of the national culture. Hlas domo va, arguably the best exile newspaper, served the Czech and Slo vak community for almost three decades. Run by František Váňa (1916-1994) in Melbourne, Hlas domova reported on the ups and downs of exile movement and, on a regular basis, it also brought news of the dismal reality of life in the communist Czechoslo vakia. Soon, Hlas domova and its editor-in-chief František Váňa became widely recognized foci of exile life in Australia delivering not only news but also providing sponsorship and help on behalf of new immigrants from Czechoslovakia, distributing books pub lished by the Czechoslovak exile publishing houses, taking part in the Radio Free Europe broadcasting and organizing exile com munity around anti-communist
activities. Highly esteemed by influential figures of the Czechoslovak exile, such as Ferdinand Peroutka, Josef Škvorecký, Jiří Voskovec or Pavel Tigrid, Hlas do mova had subscribers in many countries across all continents (in cluding Antarctica), and yet its considerable impact upon the exile community across the globe remains unstudied by historians. 160
