Zusammenfassung:To understand how ethnographers and popular artists dissected society in the nineteenth century, it is indispensable to shed some light on the terms »folk« and »people« and their various functions in scientific and public discourse. As Giorgio Agamben and others have shown, the power of these terms is derived from the combination of semantics of inclusion and exclusion. From this perspective, the article examines the development of the so-called »folk types« in Vienna in the course of the nineteenth century. Pictures and descriptions of Viennese folk types represented significant parts of the urban underclass and were, at the same time, seen as the »heartland« of urban society. Focusing on media and performative representations of characteristic social and cultural figures in terms of their construction principles, the article exhibits how »authentic« types were produced by interlocking techniques of de-contextualization, naturalization, culturalization, and folklorization.
