Zusammenfassung:The French weekly "L’Illustration" , first published in 1843, represents only the epitome of, early nineteenth-century illustrated periodical literature, which this article takes as a starting point to outline a uniqueness in French visual culture - or to be precise, in its culture of knowledge: an unparalleled enthusiasm, even euphoria,as well as strong moral expectations with regard to verbal and visual imagery. This particularity can be traced in illustrated periodicals starting from the end of the 1820s, continuing throughout the 1830s, and gradually turning into what we today call »just« illustrations in the mid-1840s. Drawing on a sample of contemporaneous voices who related to the nature of the visual modes of instruction and representation, as well as theoretically reflecting on the visual formulae applied in those periodicals, the following article also asks about the role of the outlined period with regard to the genesis and dissemination of social knowledge and education.
