THE DISCOURSE, LANGUAGE AND STYLE IN MODERN AND POSTMODERN LITERARY CREATIVITY OF REXHEP QOSJA SUMMARY Rexhep Qosja is the most productive researcher, critic, writer and publicist in the entire Albanian space, with over forty works on various topics. Literary and artistic creativity identifies the writer Rexhep Qosja as the initiator and the most peculiar representative of postmodernism in Albanian literature. With a reason, scholars studying his work of art, considered him as one of the most special representatives of postmodern Albanian literature. His novels differ from other Albanian literature novels by the way they unite the imaginary and the real, by the way of artistic shaping, the special use of language and style and in their aesthetics in general. Rexhep Qosja’s novels offer unlimited opportunities to interpret themes, subjects, ideas, characters and especially to interpret the internal structure of all associative and symbolic meanings to the inexhaustible linguistic and stylistic richness. Therefore, the study of all these issues was not only an unknown path and challenge, but also a linguistic and stylistic experimentation in a wide and continuous field of semantic, structural, linguistic and aesthetic novelties. This monograph was titled “The discourse, language and style in modem and postmodern literary creativity of Rexhep Qosja” for the fact that Rexhep Qosja s prose is a literary model that shows how literary and artistic values are created in a type of literature called subversive and exclusive of antecedent poetics. It was realized and is being
published exactly in a jubilee year - in the 85th year of the writer s birth. 785
Instead of an expected conclusion, as is required at the end of such an extensive study like this, it was considered fit to present here a brief summary because each chapter of the five major sections of this monograph is accompanied by a separate closure where the main conclusions are presented. It was decided so in order to avoid unwanted repetition. However, in this summary some essential conclusions will be presented that in a way summarize the essence of this monographic study. Before presenting these conclusions, called essential, we will remind readers of the aim of this study. The aim of this study was not only to show whether the writer Rexhep Qosja had something to say to us with his voluminous novels, even though this issue is more important for other various studies, but it was also, at the same time, to show in what way the writer tells us what he intends to tell us, how he realizes the meaning in each text, and especially how he combines the actions and discourse techniques with the content. The study does not address the writer s style in the sense of proving only his linguistic mastery, but aims to reveal his extraordinary tendency to use especially metaphors and parables and detailed descriptions, often exhaustive, accurate, systematic, akribic, multi layered, inventive, real, imaginary, suggestive, expressive, poetic, lyrical, polemical, self-ironic, sarcastic and introspective, but also perfecting the phraseology and aphorisms that distinguish the novel not only in terms of aesthetics but also in terms of meaning. Thus, from the study “The discourse,
language and style in modem and postmodern literary creativity of Rexhep Qosja”, the following conclusions emerge: 1. In our cultural space, there are rare cases when a single person with the same success, with the same distinguished results, excels in many fields of creativity as does the writer Rexhep Qosja. He is rightly called the eminent literary historian, eminent literary critic, eminent publicist, and especially eminent writer. 2. With his novels, he has brought development of literary forms, innovations and new style syntheses, new artistic expressions, he has brought enrichment to Albanian literature and to our literary experience in many directions: with contents, with ideas, with technique and with literary and linguistic organization. 3. The writer Rexhep Qosja, is rightly considered one of the 786
most peculiar representatives of postmodern Albanian literature by the scholars studying his artistic work. In all five of his novels “Vdekja më vjen prej syve të tillë” “Death comes to me from such eyes” (1974), “Një dashuri dhe shtatë faje” “One love and seven guilts” (2003), “Nata është dita jonë” “Night is our day” (2007) “Bijte e askujt” “Nobody s sons” I, II (2010) and “Të fshehtat e treguara” “Secrets Told” 2020, outstanding features of postmodernism prevail. Postmodernism, especially, of his recent novels, is the continuation of his modernism-postmodernism expressed in his first novel “Vdekja më vjen prej syve të tillë” which is considered the pioneering novel of postmodernism in Albanian literature. It is identified as such by many postmodern indicators and especially by style. Whilst, in the novels published after 2000, the postmodern tendencies become increasingly reified, and as the author becomes increasingly aware of his mission he also becomes more ironic, moreover more sarcastic. 4. The novels of the writer Rexhep Qosja are more than suitable for various literary, discursive, poetic and especially linguistic and stylistic analyzes to discover what modem and postmodern features characterize his literary and artistic work, in fact to understand what novelties and what experimental strategies the author uses in his narrative. But, the attempt to understand and explain the artistic side of his literary work cannot be limited only to the investigation of its ideas and messages, but it must also be oriented towards those elements that constitute the way of
narration and the way of conveying ideas and messages. Therefore, the way to better understand the literary work of Rexhep Qosja is also directed towards the investigation of style, and this investigation starts from the linguistic subject, from the smallest linguistic units to the literary text. 5. For modem and postmodern writers language is a very important element, in fact it is a medium to experiment and to actualize various innovations and dissolving strategies at the level of sounds, words, phrases, phraseologies, syntactic constmctions up to the level of larger textual units. According to poststructuralism, as the forerunner of postmodernism, language is understood “as an infinite movement and a permanent game of its kind in which the relations between the signifier and the signified are constantly changed, creating in this case images of stable meanings”. From this point of view, Rexhep Qosja s novels are original and very special in Albanian literature, even in language. 787
Originality and uniqueness appear in both the internal as well as in the external structure of the novels, same in the confrontation of regularity as in disorder, in the relationship between reason as in irrationality, of the hero and the antihero, as well as in the opposition of the natural with the artificial, of morality and anti-morality, of freedom and of violence, and are expressed both in their poetics and in their language and style. 6. Style, as it is known, presupposes not only the language, but also the structure of the novel - the combination of images, motifs, symbols and metaphors. In this regard, the writer Rexhep Qosja, has really proved himself to be a great master of language, virtuoso, tracer and preserver, processor and creator. It can be thought that this language, with these salient features repeated in this study, is more suitable for small topics, but Rexhep Qosja s novels have proven and argued the complete opposite. All his novels, from the first novel “Vdekja më vjen prej syve të tillë” to the last novel “Te fshehtat e treguara”, deal simultaneously with the great and small themes of history and of our present time and it is this language that has enabled the author to treat them in the way he has treated them: extraordinary. Therefore, not only his themes and ideas, but especially the language and style of his novels, praise their author as a great writer. 7. In his novels, the writer has raised the cult of art, artistry and pure artistic expression, but, at the same time, has actualized experimentation with the so-called subversive style, has
applied combined art strategies and techniques, especially with numerous cultural, historical, mythical, political, social, ethical and of course aesthetic references. As such, these novels arouse the curiosity not only of the reader, but also of the literary and linguistic scholar, not only regarding his narration and narrative strategies, but also of language and style, of the art of language and the language of art, of linguistic richness and the rich stylistics. 8. The novel is built on a very rich life and intellectual subject, a subject that has its source in the writer s personal experience, in his cultural erudition and in historical and social facts. And this richness and diversity of content, this rich intellectual and human experience, this plentifUlness of cultural, historical and social data, has required a rich language with ambiguity, a very rich language both formally and structurally, it has required a special language. The language of Rexhep Qosja s novels brings enrichment in many ways, especially in terms of 788
semantics, lexicon and syntax. 9. Rexhep Qosja s novels are distinguished by novelty, ideoaesthetic techniques and strategies, by peculiar models of critical-artistic writing, are distinguished by new awareness, attitude and sensitivity towards human and his/her world, towards his/her mentality and morality. 10. The intertextuality also heightens the remarkable historical and critical consciousness of Rexhep Qosja who relies strongly on the rich treasure of world culture, literature and its art, and in this context he stands out as a completely original creator of intertextuality. In his novels it is a powerful intellectual tool for ideological-thematic, as well as literary-artistic shaping of his modem and postmodern prose. Finally, it should be noted that the place and role of Rexhep Qosja s novels in Albanian national literature, as decoders of traditional romantic and realistic literature, are exemplary with the place and role of Marcel Proust s novels in French literature, of James Joyce in English literature, of William Faulkner in American Literature and of Ernesto Sabato in Latin American Literature. 789

THE DISCOURSE, LANGUAGE AND STYLE IN MODERN AND POSTMODERN LITERARY CREATIVITY OF REXHEP QOSJA SUMMARY Rexhep Qosja is the most productive researcher, critic, writer and publicist in the entire Albanian space, with over forty works on various topics. Literary and artistic creativity identifies the writer Rexhep Qosja as the initiator and the most peculiar representative of postmodernism in Albanian literature. With a reason, scholars studying his work of art, considered him as one of the most special representatives of postmodern Albanian literature. His novels differ from other Albanian literature novels by the way they unite the imaginary and the real, by the way of artistic shaping, the special use of language and style and in their aesthetics in general. Rexhep Qosja’s novels offer unlimited opportunities to interpret themes, subjects, ideas, characters and especially to interpret the internal structure of all associative and symbolic meanings to the inexhaustible linguistic and stylistic richness. Therefore, the study of all these issues was not only an unknown path and challenge, but also a linguistic and stylistic "experimentation' in a wide and continuous field of semantic, structural, linguistic and aesthetic novelties. This monograph was titled “The discourse, language and style in modem and postmodern literary creativity of Rexhep Qosja” for the fact that Rexhep Qosja's prose is a literary model that shows how literary and artistic values are created in a type of literature called subversive and exclusive of antecedent poetics. It was realized and is being
published exactly in a jubilee year - in the 85th year of the writer's birth. 785
Instead of an expected conclusion, as is required at the end of such an extensive study like this, it was considered fit to present here a brief summary because each chapter of the five major sections of this monograph is accompanied by a separate closure where the main conclusions are presented. It was decided so in order to avoid unwanted repetition. However, in this summary some essential conclusions will be presented that in a way summarize the essence of this monographic study. Before presenting these conclusions, called essential, we will remind readers of the aim of this study. The aim of this study was not only to show whether the writer Rexhep Qosja had something to say to us with his voluminous novels, even though this issue is more important for other various studies, but it was also, at the same time, to show in what way the writer tells us what he intends to tell us, how he realizes the meaning in each text, and especially how he combines the actions and discourse techniques with the content. The study does not address the writer's style in the sense of proving only his linguistic mastery, but aims to reveal his extraordinary tendency to use especially metaphors and parables and detailed descriptions, often exhaustive, accurate, systematic, akribic, multi layered, inventive, real, imaginary, suggestive, expressive, poetic, lyrical, polemical, self-ironic, sarcastic and introspective, but also perfecting the phraseology and aphorisms that distinguish the novel not only in terms of aesthetics but also in terms of meaning. Thus, from the study “The discourse,
language and style in modem and postmodern literary creativity of Rexhep Qosja”, the following conclusions emerge: 1. In our cultural space, there are rare cases when a single person with the same success, with the same distinguished results, excels in many fields of creativity as does the writer Rexhep Qosja. He is rightly called the eminent literary historian, eminent literary critic, eminent publicist, and especially eminent writer. 2. With his novels, he has brought development of literary forms, innovations and new style syntheses, new artistic expressions, he has brought enrichment to Albanian literature and to our literary experience in many directions: with contents, with ideas, with technique and with literary and linguistic organization. 3. The writer Rexhep Qosja, is rightly considered one of the 786
most peculiar representatives of postmodern Albanian literature by the scholars studying his artistic work. In all five of his novels “Vdekja më vjen prej syve të tillë” “Death comes to me from such eyes” (1974), “Një dashuri dhe shtatë faje” “One love and seven guilts” (2003), “Nata është dita jonë” “Night is our day” (2007) “Bijte e askujt” “Nobody's sons” I, II (2010) and “Të fshehtat e treguara” “Secrets Told” 2020, outstanding features of postmodernism prevail. Postmodernism, especially, of his recent novels, is the continuation of his modernism-postmodernism expressed in his first novel “Vdekja më vjen prej syve të tillë” which is considered the pioneering novel of postmodernism in Albanian literature. It is identified as such by many postmodern indicators and especially by style. Whilst, in the novels published after 2000, the postmodern tendencies become increasingly reified, and as the author becomes increasingly aware of his mission he also becomes more ironic, moreover more sarcastic. 4. The novels of the writer Rexhep Qosja are more than suitable for various literary, discursive, poetic and especially linguistic and stylistic analyzes to discover what modem and postmodern features characterize his literary and artistic work, in fact to understand what novelties and what experimental strategies the author uses in his narrative. But, the attempt to understand and explain the artistic side of his literary work cannot be limited only to the investigation of its ideas and messages, but it must also be oriented towards those elements that constitute the way of
narration and the way of conveying ideas and messages. Therefore, the way to better understand the literary work of Rexhep Qosja is also directed towards the investigation of style, and this investigation starts from the linguistic subject, from the smallest linguistic units to the literary text. 5. For modem and postmodern writers language is a very important element, in fact it is a medium to experiment and to actualize various innovations and dissolving strategies at the level of sounds, words, phrases, phraseologies, syntactic constmctions up to the level of larger textual units. According to poststructuralism, as the forerunner of postmodernism, language is understood “as an infinite movement and a permanent game of its kind in which the relations between the signifier and the signified are constantly changed, creating in this case images of stable meanings”. From this point of view, Rexhep Qosja's novels are original and very special in Albanian literature, even in language. 787
Originality and uniqueness appear in both the internal as well as in the external structure of the novels, same in the confrontation of regularity as in disorder, in the relationship between reason as in irrationality, of the hero and the antihero, as well as in the opposition of the natural with the artificial, of morality and anti-morality, of freedom and of violence, and are expressed both in their poetics and in their language and style. 6. Style, as it is known, presupposes not only the language, but also the structure of the novel - the combination of images, motifs, symbols and metaphors. In this regard, the writer Rexhep Qosja, has really proved himself to be a great master of language, virtuoso, tracer and preserver, processor and creator. It can be thought that this language, with these salient features repeated in this study, is more suitable for small topics, but Rexhep Qosja's novels have proven and argued the complete opposite. All his novels, from the first novel “Vdekja më vjen prej syve të tillë” to the last novel “Te fshehtat e treguara”, deal simultaneously with the great and small themes of history and of our present time and it is this language that has enabled the author to treat them in the way he has treated them: extraordinary. Therefore, not only his themes and ideas, but especially the language and style of his novels, praise their author as a great writer. 7. In his novels, the writer has raised the cult of art, artistry and pure artistic expression, but, at the same time, has actualized experimentation with the so-called subversive style, has
applied combined art strategies and techniques, especially with numerous cultural, historical, mythical, political, social, ethical and of course aesthetic references. As such, these novels arouse the curiosity not only of the reader, but also of the literary and linguistic scholar, not only regarding his narration and narrative strategies, but also of language and style, of the art of language and the language of art, of linguistic richness and the rich stylistics. 8. The novel is built on a very rich life and intellectual subject, a subject that has its source in the writer's personal experience, in his cultural erudition and in historical and social facts. And this richness and diversity of content, this rich intellectual and human experience, this plentifUlness of cultural, historical and social data, has required a rich language with ambiguity, a very rich language both formally and structurally, it has required a special language. The language of Rexhep Qosja's novels brings enrichment in many ways, especially in terms of 788
semantics, lexicon and syntax. 9. Rexhep Qosja's novels are distinguished by novelty, ideoaesthetic techniques and strategies, by peculiar models of critical-artistic writing, are distinguished by new awareness, attitude and sensitivity towards human and his/her world, towards his/her mentality and morality. 10. The intertextuality also heightens the remarkable historical and critical consciousness of Rexhep Qosja who relies strongly on the rich treasure of world culture, literature and its art, and in this context he stands out as a completely original creator of intertextuality. In his novels it is a powerful intellectual tool for ideological-thematic, as well as literary-artistic shaping of his modem and postmodern prose. Finally, it should be noted that the place and role of Rexhep Qosja's novels in Albanian national literature, as decoders of traditional romantic and realistic literature, are exemplary with the place and role of Marcel Proust's novels in French literature, of James Joyce in English literature, of William Faulkner in American Literature and of Ernesto Sabato in Latin American Literature. 789
